sad  Got word today that my treatement did not bring about results that we hoped for. My combo of Xeloda and taxater took my tumor from 2.2x1.8x0.6 to 3.6x2.4x.25. I am sadden at the prospect of more chemo. I was so ready for the next step surgery. I have got to get myself up for this. My power is scanty on this go around.

I guess my question would be why do they not do surgery and give up trying to make the tumor smaller? Used to be that surgery was always the first step, but the past few years the tumor has been the goal. I can understand your hesitance in doing chemo again so quickly. Can you get a second opinion? I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs Mary K.

Sorry you did not get better news....and while I always agree on a 2nd opinion, I know you are at the best place around.....people go to the U for a 2nd opinion, and you are already there! (With my onc, no less, so I sure hope he is right!)...but please do ask questions and if not satisfied, take a trip to Karmanos for another opinion. We're here for you...

I had chemo first and swear by it. Very large tumors and IBC have been treated this way for a long time now. I know when I got the treatment he told me it had been about 10 years of accepted practice among leading drs. That was in 1998. He actually told the first dr. I talked to, he should either keep up with treatments or stop doing surgery on women with bc. My tumor went from a little over 5 cm. to about 2 1/4. That was on the A/C treatment. I hope they find what ever will cause major shinkage for you. I will keep you in my thoughts, joyce

I also had chemo before surgery.  My onc explained that the great thing about it is that we would know what type of chemo would work on my cancer and if the first one didn't work we could keep trying until we find one that works so if it ever did come back we would know what works.  I really liked that reassurance.  I took CAF first and then Taxotere.  I got really sick with the Taxotere and could only tolerate 2 treatments.  The tumor did not shrink from 6cm, but most of the tissue was benign which means that the chemo did its job. 

So hang in there they will find the chemo that works for you.

Hang in there and try to stay strong. 2nd opinion is always a good thing if you question anything your doctor tells you. My health care team has a weekly b/c clinic where many doctors and health care workers met. My doctor presented my case and all agreed on the treatment I received. It was like having 15 opinions. Would that type of thing be available to you? Hope they find the right treatment for you. Prayers and hugs, Candy

I am so sorry that the treatment didn't work. It is such a downer to realize that all the weeks and months of chemo didn't get rid of or shrink the tumors. Be mad! Get Angry! Cry! Yell! You have every right to but once you feel in control after getting these emotions out, then decide what you need to do next. Second opinion? If there is any doubt in your mind, then get one. You can't fight this darn disease if you are doubting your course of treatment. Continue w/ what your oncologist has recommended? Whatever it is that you decide, then be committed to it 100% and beat those tumors into just a bad memory! We are all here for you. Whatever you need!
