Post radiation pain anyone?

I remember reading in Susan Love's book years ago, that after radiation, you can have flare-ups of pain throughout the years. Saturday I woke up and the left side of my left (affected) breast is tender to the touch (with pressure, not the skin) and I feel it if I move certain ways. Pressure, like resting my arm on it when I sleep, is causing discomfort too. I think it may be a little better since Saturday... anyone else experience this? I am 5 years out from rads. I also wondered if there could be some irritation from the surgical clips? Anyway, my regular onc appointment is in 2 weeks, so I will check in with him then.

Anyone else have anything like this?

Hi Lori! I have that pain quite often. My manipulative therapist said that it is caused from scar tissue that is the result of the radiation. Usually I can work it out but often I take an Ibuprofin 800 and then go for my adjustment. I have had to have shots in the chest area to help w/ the pain. Have you lifted anything heavy or done any usual work where you used that arm more than usual?

Hi Lori, I do not get the type of pain you described, but rather a cramping of the muscles in the chest if I move a certain way or tense up just so. It is there and then gone, almost like a charlie horse. And, it's been 9 years since I finished rads. Hope you are more comfortable soon. Gentle hugs, Lauri

Thanks gals...I do not recall doing anything strenuous or unusual, but who knows....like when you get a giant bruise and have no recollection of getting it....

It only bothers me with pressure or certain movements. Add this to the list, along with my sternal joint pain that I still have. That is arthritic changes blamed on rads. The gift that keeps on giving....well if it cured my cancer, I will gladly take some mild discomfort!

I'll see how it goes, but I am on the books for Aug 9 with my onc, so if it is still flared up then, I will discuss with him. Could make for an interesting mammogram that day... EYOOUCCHHH!

I did not have radiation, but eight years after my reconstruction I still feel pains in the new breast. I figure they are nerved endings trying to activate. Sometimes the crazy thing itches inside until I could scream trying to stop it. Same thing happens in my abdomen. You are right, it definitely is the gift that keeps on giving. Good luck on the 9th, we'll be there with you in spirit. Hugs MK
