April 7th is fine. It will be hard to wait but nothing earth shattering will happen in such a short time. If you had symptoms of one of the aggressive cancers it would be different, but you don't, so you can relax a little. Your doctor is wrong...young women do get breast cancer...just not as often. It's statistically more likely in women over 60, so it's not the first thing doctors look for in someone your age. The family history you state is not a factor. The only family history that counts is a first degree relative- mother, father, sister, brother. Having other relatives with breast cancer does not affect your chances. However, you don't have to have any cancer history in your family in order to be diagnosed. (I had none, but my daughters will now have a first degree relative to add to their chances.) Women's breasts go through tremendous changes at certain points of their lives and lumps, bumps, and soreness are common in your 20's. (Particularly when you are having changes in your monthly cycles.) Your doctor may be right but since you are getting so upset, he should order a screening mammogram, not an ultrasound. They are not routinely offered to women under 40 in the U.S. and sometimes insurance companies won't pay for them before then, but they aren't all that expensive so you could pay for it yourself if you need to. There are organizations online that offer reduced cost or free mammograms. Google and see what is in your area. Good luck.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me!
I was really looking forward to the cyst going down in size after my period but when it got larger and a bit harder and a bit more bruised, I started really worrying.
I've also been having nipple pains in the breast that has the lump. Could all be hormonal of course.
I know very well my fear is because of just how many women I know under the age of 50 have been diagnosed recently. I feel very selfish and silly for worrying so much.
I feel much better about
possibly having to wait until April. Thank you ladies so very much. Thank you for your patience. I feel terrible even asking these questions because my own worries and fears are nothing compared to you brave women who have or are facing this. I feel stupid and weak for worrying so much. My mom keeps telling me to ask my Aunts about
their breast cancer but I just can't bring myself to burden them with my worries when they have very real worries of their own. So thank you so much for your advice, it means the world to me.
I suppose another big worry of mine is that my drastic hormonal changes could be related to cancer. I've also switched diet quite drastically for my IBS, not sure if that could kickstart my hormones into overdrive, havent found much info online, but it seems to me I've been having whacky hormones for awhile now. progressively getting worse.
Some good news is I quit smoking the day I found the lump. I haven't drank in months and if nothing else this has given me the push I needed to kick some very bad habits.
