Hi everyone:

I'm new to the Forum and have a general question for everyone. I had a mammogram done a few weeks ago which stated I had a solid, sharply defined, 1 cm. nodule in my right breast that appeared benign in nature. They recommended that I have a spot compression and an ultrasound done. The mammo just confirmed what they originally thought; the ultrasound stated that the nodule was a combination of a cyst and some solid material, with multiple internal echoes. They also said the shape was lobulated. I am scheduled for a core biopsy this Friday. They recommended the biopsy because of the solid component of the nodule.

My question is: Does anyone know if this is what is known as a complex cyst, because of its combined nature? Is it common for complex cysts to be cancerous? I am very nervous about this and was hoping someone could provide me with their opinion on this. Thanks!

Catarina, I do not know the answer to your question, but some lady here will respond, I am sure. In the mean time, stay calm and stay positive. Glad you found us and that you have asked for help. In the meantime, try to google "breast cancer" and under advanced, "complex cyst" and see what you get. Maybe it will help.

Thanks, JUJU. I did some research and found that in general, complex cysts have a pretty low rate of malignancy. Coupled with the fact that the initial mammogram seems to indicate it's benign, it probably IS benign, but I won't feel completely better until I know for sure. It's so nice to know that there are people out there who care! I'll let you know when I get the results, which should be early next week.

The only true way of knowing whether a mass is cancer is to biopsy, so you are doing what you need to learn for sure. You can ask for a copy of the pathology report when it comes back, so you will be able to understand. Sometimes having a doctor just tell you gets lost in the mind boggling mess of information. A cyst has fluid in it, the solid part does not. I have not really heard the term "complex cyst" mentioned much if at all. We will be waiting to celebrate your good news or help if it is not so good. Hi Everyone:

I just wanted to let you all know that I went for my biopsy this morning, and all went well. It turns out that the nodule I had was solid after all, and not a cyst. However, the doctor who performed the biopsy said that it looked benign to him on the ultrasound; in fact, he said that it doesn't even have one characteristic typical of malignancy. This made my feel better, but I won't be completely at ease until I get my results, which should be on Monday or Tuesday. I'll let you all know when I find out for sure, but right now, I feel pretty optimistic. Thanks again to all of you for your kindness and support!

Sounds good to me, too. I hope and pray you will get good news! Doctors have a real good idea when they look at masses, but they are not always correct and it is best to have the certainty of a biopsy. Let us know soon as you hear and we will celebrate with you. Hugs MK

Hi everyone:


I just wanted to share my good news with all of you. My biopsy results came back negative; the doctor just said the nodule was due to fibrocystic changes. Since I have very dense breasts, he wants to do another ultrasound in 3 months just to monitor the fibrocystic changes and make sure it doesn't turn into something else. Thanks again to all of you for your concern and support! I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
