I HAVE BEAT IT AGAIN!!!!!!!

Got the results back from my PET scan and it said that there were no metabolically active areas identified to suggest metastatic disease. In other words, the Herceptin, Navelbine, God, good friends to pick you up when down beat it again! Also my bone scan was clear (other than a few thousand places that showed arthritis...duh!)

I called my new onco on Fri to have them read me the results. I couldn't believe what they read so waited to tell anyone (other than my best friend) until I saw my onco today. (btw..I did change onco this month) Even after I had the report in my hands, I questioned how many scans this dr does daily and how many of my PET scans he compared the new one to. I  insisted that they call and make sure that this was MY scan. I know my new onco thinks I am totally nuts.

So ladies, whether you are just starting down this path of treatment for the first time or have a recurrance and fighting it for the 2nd or 3rd time, don't give up hope. You can BEAT it again and again. And trust me, each time you win it feels better and better!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! I am so happy for you, I tell ya, it's that HERCEPTIN that is the magic bullet. How long had you gone before this recurrance dx??

Stef: It was almost 2 yrs before my recurrance. When I was first diagnosed I was between a Stage II and III and had 19 of 21 lymph nodes positive. I was in the clincial trial for the herceptin but I didn't receive it then. I do believe that Herceptin is the miracle drug right now for bc. I am living proof of that. The side effects are minimal and I can tell you that I don't mind continuing taking it once a month for as long as needed.

Thanks everyone for your congrats. I was so afraid to believe it. I found out that the PET scan had been compared to one taken in 2004. I almost came unglued. So on Mon afternoon I called my onco office and requested that they get the ones from 2005. They called me back on Tues and said that there was NO cancer. That the PET scan in 2005 had shown that the core was dead but that there was still some activity on the outside of it. My old onco did NOT tell me this. If I had known, my mental attitude would have been so much better just knowing that the darn place was shrinking and that all of the treatments were worth it. Guess what I am attempting to say is make sure that your onco reads you what the report says. Even a little good news goes a long way.

Good advice! I try to get them to fax me the report, which they usually grumble loudly about, but too bad. I had herceptin for 1 yr and would have liked to continue it but my onc said 'one year is enough'... but i am coming up on 5-yr anniversary next month, and so far nothings cropped up (cross fingers and toes). but to know it's there if/when i need it is comforting, considering i didn't get to take tamoxifen! (ER-).

Thanks Di! That sounds like a great idea. I use to drive thru Vandalia on my way to Quincy for soccer games. Always wanted to stop at that furniture store but never had the time going up and usually had a car full of wet, tired girls on the way home. Never failed that it would rain when we had games in Quincy. lol

We do get to St. Louis in the summer several times. How far are you from there?

My ex drives me to my doctors' appointments in St. Louis. It is about 3 hours away. It is the one city that I would not drive into. No one will let me either. With my bad chemo brain, I try not to drive into strange places. That sounds nuts, but it is true. I would meet you somewhere on this side of the STL bridges. Vandalia is great. Furniture shopping is always high on my list, although I rarely actuallly buy any. I know of some towns on this side, like Greenville but I don't know what else there is but the prison. How far are you from Vandalia? Hugs, Di

Have been reading everyday but not posting. I really could not let this go by. I am so very happy that you have kicked some cancer butt again and may you never have to hear those words again. This is such good news for so many women, I am glad that I went ahead and started the herceptin. It seems to go on forever but forever I will take. I wish you many blessings and only good health.

Lauri and Donna: Thanks so much for the good wishes. I have to be honest and say that it is almost as hard to adjust to being told that you have beat it again as it was the first time. It has taken me several weeks to be able to believe and accept it. Know it sounds wierd but it does take some time. Donna, I am glad that you started the Herceptin also. It seems to be the "miracle" drug right now for bc. I will continue to take it monthly.

I think that the most important thing is for all of us to know that we can beat it..again and again..if necessary. Just as long as we have friends such as all of the gals here and keep our attitude positive!
