Hi Ladies,my onc. says its a good idea to have my ovaries taken out,does that mean that if they take my ovaries then no harmones can enter my body?does anyone know about this?   Tammy

Tammy, I asked my onc why should I take tamoxifen if my ovaries are out (taken out 9 mo after the bc due to cysts).
She said that the adrenal gland puts out a small amout of estrogen, so I still had to do the 5 yrs. I don't know about any other situations though.
Hope this at least tells you something....=)

Also, fat cells put out estrogen, and to a lesser extent, so do muscles. However, without ovaries, you would be in menopause and would "qualify" for the aromatase inhibitors which are getting written up as being better than tamoxifen for keeping away recurrences.

I think I may be getting my ovaries out, also. I wish you luck!

I would think there would be at least a short period of time you would not be able to lift while everything heals. Since is it not a major area, it shouldn't be too long. Take care of yourself if you overdo and mess something up it will take more time to get it fixed and healed again. Hugs MK

What she said.  Scar tissue stinks and if you do too much too soon, it creates more scar tissue.

 

I had a hyster and oopher.  I was eligible for the aromatase inhibitor and am taking it after having taken tamox for a couple of years.  Onc said there were a few ways to go and he felt most comfortable with this one.  Actually, he put it "If God God God forbid you had a recurrance, I would wonder if I had done the right thing, so we should start the Arimidex now.?"  I'm really glad that I'm now eligible for it.

I still have my ovaries but have had a hysterectomy, everytime I mention it to my Onc she does not say too much about getting them out. I thought being er/pr positive meant I should get rid of them. I know going thru chemo is supposed to put you into menopause but I really did not start havind bad hot flashes until a couple of weeks ago. I guess maybe am on my way now. Were you er/pr positive? and have you had a hysterectomy? Keep me posted on your latest journey.

Im 44 years old and i had a hysterectomy 23 years ago because of a prolapsed uterus and im ER possitive,I see the gynocologist friday about getting the ovaries as my onc.thinks this would be best.I will keep you posted. Tammy

My onc. said the same thing Gail. Because I thought I would automatically be put on aromatase inhib. but she said no, the 5 year of tam is the best way to go.  She also said the chances of osteo are higher with aromatase inhib. so she is keeping me on the tam. for the full 5 years.

 

Whatever you do Tammy do not take the "natural" or herbal remedies on the shelf. They are plant estrogen based and your body will use it like your own estrogen, that is why it helps with the symptoms of menopause.

 

Lifting restrictions will be depending on what type of surgery you have.  Have you checked out Hystersisters.com?  great site for gaining all the knowledge you need on the subject.
