I am due for another re-check of my "funny-looking" fibroadenoma next month and am wondering if I should just see about getting it removed.  So far none of the medical folks have recommended doing that yet I've been told by others to just get it taken out.  Opinions?

My opinion is to get it out, especially if it is funny-looking. Just my 2cents, though, and I'm not a Dr. You have to do what feels right to you - for now and for the future. You want to be able to look back on this many years from now and know you did the right decision for you. Do some research, find out that the literature suggests and make your decision. Then if your docs don't agree, get a second opinion. They are not the ones living with the decision!

I also agree that it should be removed, why not? It is not doing you any good but worrying you because you know it is there. Laure' has some really good thoughts about it. You have to be proactive and take care of yourself. Hugs, MK

I agree, have it removed. Like MK said, why not? Then you can relax. Sometimes you have to be assertive to get the Dr to move on it. Good luck!

Why not have it removed. It seems we are all of one mind. What a relief for you to have it gone. My DS has repeated fibroadenoma and has always had them removed. Her doctor never missed a step from dx to removal. But.....we are all different and the research suggested to you is very good advice. Let us know what you decide.

To have it removed I have no doubt I'll have to request this as I don't think either my family doc or the radiologist will recommend taking it out. From what I've read most fibroadenomas grow larger and eventually need to be removed. I worry that if I wait too long it will cause even more problems plus I have no idea if removing it when it's larger would make one breast much smaller than the other? My husband thinks I should wait until the doc says to take it out. I personally would feel more comfortable having it removed. Is there a way to find a breast surgeon in my area? When I try to look it up all the search comes back w/are plastic surgeons. Is that what you guys are referring to when you say breast surgeons? Or are breast surgeons specialized like neurosurgeons or ob/gyn's, etc.?

Hi Laura! I am a little late answering this post. Sorry about that. In the area where I live, there are plastic surgeons that specialize in breast reconstruction. Whether it is reconstruction, augmentation or reduction. I would call my pcp and ask him/her for some names. Then call the plastic surgeon and ask questions...how many breast surgeries have they done...what is their speciality....do they have pics you can see...do they have former patients that you can contact and speak with? Check w/ several of them. I agree w/ everyone that you should have it removed. There is no need for you to continue to worry and have to go for checkups to "just make sure". Fight for what you want.
