Follow Up Mammogram and Biopsy

In May I had a routine mammogram. I got a call back due to suspicious spot. I went back for diagnostic mammogram and ultra sound. The original spot turned out to be fine. But, they found another spot! It was round and they biopsied and left a "tag." I got a call back that the biopsy was benign. But, then I was told to come back for a six month follow up mammogram. This follow up mammogram is in 10 days and I am very worried. I have a difficult time asking questions of the doctors.

Does this sound routine? Why is there another follow up? How many people had this process turn into a cancer diagnosis? Does a benign spot indicate increased likelihood of cancer in the future?

Hi JRJRJY, great news on everything turning out to be benign! You are being monitored to make sure you don't have any changes which is a good thing. In my 40's I had a mammo that came back abnormal. It was determined they were calcifications after more testing. For 2 years I had a mammo every 6 months. After that I went back to the yearly one.

I understand the anxiety part involved, I dreaded going every time. I can't answer your question about cancer cropping up later. I can only give you my experience. Good luck with your mammo.
