I found a lump over a week ago and went to my gp he examined me and told me that the lump i  had was firoadenoma, and that I would have to have it cut out and he would write a letter to the breast clinic. I have been doing some research on what he told me i had but i want to know if just by feeling at the lump the dr can determine what the lump is or was he just easing my mind while i went to the breast clinic. the research i have done regarding this matter says that the lump can be moved when touched mine is moving no where and this is what is worrying me. anyone with previous fibroadenoma your comments would be grateful thankyou.

NOOOO!!! A doctor cannot tell by feeling the lump, but at least yours told you he wanted it out. That is where you learn for sure what it is. Some doctors guess and tell you to wait 6 months and come back. It definitely is wise to have it removed and find out for sure right away. Early detection is one of the best ways to be a longtime survivor if you are diagnosed with breast cancer. 80% of lumps are not cancer, so get it removed and that may be the last you hear of it. MK is absolutely right. No one can tell for sure what a lump is unless it is taken out. They can have a good idea based on some indicators, but stick around here long enough and you'll find a lot of people whose doctors were wrong. Not trying to scare you, because as MK said 80% of all lumps are benign, but you are right to question. Get it out and get certainty.

Hi, your doctor is WRONG. He can NOT tell if it is a fibroadenoma or not, unless there is an ultrasound plus biopsie result. I found a lump in my breast about 2 months ago. My doctor examined it and referred me to a breast diagnostic center after he did a first ultrasound on my right breast and diagnosed it as a solid breast lump. He said it will brobably be a fibroadenoma. But nobody knows for sure until I get my biopsie. So I went to the clinic and I got a second ultrasound to verify that I need a biopsie. Then I got a core biopsie just 2 days ago. They took samples of the tissue. Today morning I had to come back for the result. It was negative .. no cancer. It was in fact a fibroadenoma. But please make sure that you follow the same steps as me. That's the only way to make sure that you are really having a fibroadenoma, not a malignant (cancerous) tumour. But if you are still young, it will more likely be a firbroadenoma like mine. But better make sure! Good luck !!!

One more thing .. I don't understand why they want to take it out right away???? Usually, a core biopsie is been made to take some tissue samples .. to avoid taking out the whole thing. Is your lump really big???

Unless they have done an ultrasound and mammogram and have real suspicion (in my case, the ultrasound was highly suspicious for malignancy), sometimes they do recommend removing it. In my case, the surgeon said even if it was a fibroadenoma, they needed to remove it. The fact that they are skipping the core needle biopsy means nothing at this time. And moveable does not mean that it is loose and can slide around the breast, but they see if it feels attached as a mass. Whether it is moveable is just one thing they look at,....moveable is a better sign, but cannot diagnose a lumo just by touch.

Kudos to your doc for sending you for more tests. Hang in there,...the waiting is really hard, we know.
