My nephew who is in his mid 50s was in a storage area and somehow lost his balance. In trying to break his fall he landed on an old toilet which broke into pieces with his landing. A chard went into his upper thigh at the juncture of his cheek, severing the sciatic nerve, some other nerves and evidently an artery. He had his cell phone in his pocket and was able to punch #1 speed dial which would call his inlaws who live next door. Only they weren't home but miles away. They called his wife and she called the ambulance. Meanwhile my nephew successfully used some binding tape to make a tourniquet and stop the bleeding. He said he was glad he had been a Boy Scout. He managed to stay alert
until the EMTs got him into the ambulance and on the way to the local hospital, where he was care flighted to a Pittsburgh Hospital.
When my sister in law finally talked to him, he told her the pain was horrible, but no way did he want the local paper headlines to read "Local Man Dies in Freak Accident with a Toilet." I can just see him joking about his close call. They were able to reattach the sciatic nerve but said it would be at least two years before he will have any feeling in his leg. He has to wear a brace, but right now he is still flat on his back because lifting his leg just three inches is so terribly painful.
You just never know, do you, what might happen. MK
