One of those rough computer days..................

I told you all I had gotten Satellite internet connection.  After spending nearly $500 I am beginning to think I made a very big mistake.  The first few days it worked pretty well, except I don't really like their email format and system.  But three nights ago I got a message from Norton that I had an error and to fix, click on the button.  Well, I clicked and Norton began uninstalling itself and then told me to reinstall when that was done.  I was up until midnight doing all that.  The next day went pretty well until evening when all of a sudden the new WildBlue went crazy.  I called Tech support and told them what was happening and the supervisor told me that she thought it was very strange that Norton would uninstall itself. She suggested I run a FULL scan and look for viruses.  So I ran a full scan and watched as the files flipped by for awhile.  I noticed several strange sounding files with HiKey in them.  There are Hkey files, but when I got back to WildBlue Tech and went to Norton Tech they both said I had a virus or a hacker's spyware. I was told to call a special viral removal number at Norton, another $100 and they would remove it for me.  Well, we were moving right along in spite of the language problems when a huge thunderstorm came up and I lost internet connection.  Guess that happens when you have satellite. So we hung up and an hour later the connection was back so we started again to do the fix and here comes another wave of storm.  So tomorrow morning at 9 am my new friend, "Peter" from India will call me to finish fixing my computer.  Wild Blue email is still not functional, but I am able to be on line and yes it is faster............... I am sooo tired but I did call and leave a message for Jo-Ann.  She never answers her phone anymore.

I used to use Norton and found it to be a huge resource hog and have switched to AVG.  It used to be AVG Free, but I think there is a charge for it now.  Along with that I use and run Spybot and Ad-Aware on a regular basis.  (They are both free as well)  For help with computers, and I mean just about any help you could want, I found the folks at:

to be especially helpful.  (I hope it's okay I posted that link?)   I have no vested interest in bleepingcomputer, but I do know that those people are very good and make things easy for us who might not be so technically minded.

One thing:  I always unplug my puters during thunderstorms.  I've heard of folks having their motherboards etc. fried with one lightening  strike.

I think my problems are all ironed out. The tech never did find the files to delete them, so they either disappeared or turned into another name. I hope that is not the case. However, all is working well except when it rains hard and I lose the satellite which is one problem with having a satellite system. It is really faster than the old dial up. I talked to Jo-Ann again yesterday and she is also having trouble with her computer. She is having the whole family to her mini house for Memorial Day picnic. Now that is what she really needs!!!! But anyhow, she said she is working on a post (about the farm, I assume).
