Hello everyone,

 

I just received a Birads category 2 after a followup spot compression and ultrasound on my right breast.

 

My question is whether or not the Birads scale takes into consideration family cancer history or if it only considers what the radiologist sees?

 

I'm concerned if Birads doesn't take into consideration family history because the following members of my family have had cancer.

 

Father - Breast Cancer

Aunt on mother's side of family- Uterine Cancer

Grandmothers on both sides of the family - Breast Cancer

Great Aunt on mother's side of family - Breast Cancer

 

The radiologist is suggesting a followup mammogram in one year.

I am not sure, but I think the birad is simply based on what is seen by the radiologist. THe family history should be taken into account to formulate the recommendations. The father with breast cancer is the most concerning as far as family history is concerned. If it were me, I would take my films and report and go to a breast specialist. You might want to ask about being followed in a high risk center, where they will monitor you more often than the regular woman.

Good chance that a year is reasonable, but with the history in your dad, I would suggest seeking a second opinion.
