Hi, everyone: I'm the one with the sister in England who underwent radiation in June.  Well, after quite a long healing period her breast is suddenly hot and red again and she's quite uncomfortable.  Also, the swelling from the treatment never went down.  Has anyone had this problem? She's seeing the specialist again on Sept 21st.  Should she wait or should she go sooner?  Thanks so much for any advice.

When she made the appointment did she tell them of the redness and the swelling? Something is wrong there for sure. I suggest she call back and tell them of her discomfort and see if she can get the appointment moved up. Tell her to be sure to give them all the details on the phone.

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, I thought this was about having radiation and since I never had it I felt I couldn't be of any help. Things have been a little slow lately and I noticed you were not answered so I decided to check and see if I could help.

Hello,MK, and thank you so much.  I just called my sister and in fact she has now made an appointment with the oncologist for this Tuesday, so I am much relieved.  It may be a problem with scar tissue; she says it's very tender and "crampy" and there's a ridge where she had the lumpectomy.  My friend who is an OB-GYN said an infection is quite common following radiation.  Anyway, I will update you next week once we know more.  Cheers,

Good news!  I just talked to my sis.  The breast nurse is actually very pleased with her progress and told her to be patient.  I guess that's not a family trait!  Once she heard that the healing time should be 2 - 3 months back in June, she had it locked into her mind, and since it's been three months she was ready for it to be completely healed. 

My father always says:

Patience is a virtue

Possess it if you can

Seldom in a woman

And never in a man

Hi, I see your sister has already gotten some reassurances from the nurse. I recall that it took a long time for the swelling and redness to go away. Many months later I could still make out the "tan" line from the radiation. Some bodies just need more time to heal than others do. Good luck to her. Lauri
