for excessive absences. Due to being chronically ill.
I feel...petrified, ill and really, really angry.

I am sorry to hear that you got fired. Try and take it one day at a time. Stressing will only cause you to get worse. I know it is easier said than done, but please trust the Lord on this one. There is always a reason for everything. Maybe now you can apply for social security disability benefits and get the help you really need. Good Luck!

Thanks, hun. It really helps to have someone just say hey, it's going to be ok.

I have the same problem with my job right now, I have been talked too about
my absences. I do agree that everything happens for a reason so stick in there, it's a blessing in disguise :)
I have gotten fired before and that day I was just in shock. I cried, not for myself but for the people that I would be letting down.

Were you warned in advance about
your absences and told what would happen if they continued? I would be questioning whether or not your firing was legal - you might want to ask for some advice about
that.
I hope that after the shock has passed, you're able to regroup and plan for your future. Things always get better in my view...sometimes it just takes a bit longer than we're expecting. Do you have family support, and/or a good group of friends to stick with you through this? I hope so, it sure helps.
Good luck and I'll be praying for you, that something happens in your life so you don't have to worry about
stuff.
hugs,
Pam (visiting from the Chronic Pain forum!)

Oh yes, they went through the warnings. Problem is their policies regarding time and absences, how they're worded, etc. We didn't get "sick time" - we accrued PTO (paid time off) as we worked and that was supposed to be enough to cover vacation and sick time. Well see, the thing is, if you miss work (unless approved beforehand, like vacation) for ANY reason - you get an "occurrence" - after 3 of those, you get your first warning. So, if you're sick - even if you have the PTO to use - you get an occurrence. Also, one of the blurbs in the policies states that you may be required to provide a note from your doctor regarding your absence, and that failure to provide it may result in an occurrence. So that seems to me to say if you get a note, you're cool, otherwise you get an occurrence. Basically - you're screwed one way or the other. Ill, your power's out, your pc goes down (mine did, got infected from a virus that I got while using THEIR security software), your phone or internet goes down - you get an occurrence. And I work for the phone/internet provider. Pretty messed up, isn't it?
To cover my butt, I ALWAYS went to the doc to get a doctor's note. Did it matter? Not one bit. No matter how you slice it, unless they tell you yeah you can take that day off in advance - you get an occurrence. Pretty horrible. I'm not sure how to find out about
if this is legal or not - it sure isn't ethical. I was given the name of a lady in HR that I can speak to - and I suppose a lawyer is always an option. I sent a message to my first supervisor - she was excellent and she's helped people before, including me - to get her advice. That was days ago and I haven't heard anything else. I don't want to bug her but I need to know if they can get away with this.
I'm putting in apps wherever I can. I'm taking a few classes to learn a new skill. I filed for unemployment - but I fully expect them to fight it. Being denied that will be a huge financial burden for us. And I really want to look into disability. I've requested a free consult with a disability lawyer in order to see if I'm a candidate.
I really appreciate everyone's support. It means the world to me <3

Sorry to hear about
that.
I have been on and off work since Dec with tensions headaches and some issues with vertigo...etc.
But I was told about
the Family Medical Leave Act...i had no clue it applied to an employee with medical issues...I always thought it was just for pregnacy or to care for a sick relative.
But it does apply to an employee who needs time off to go to doctors and to be out of work when it just is impossible to go in, covers you for 12 weeks. And there is even something about
an intermidtant(sp?) work schedule until you are feeling better.
i don't know how many employees your company has but ours is mid size with over 50 employees and it is part of our company policy book. i am in Florida and have no clue if it changes from state to state.
Just wonder if they do have it in place, why no one offered it to you?
My supervisor was the one that told me about
it.
Hopefully, you are able to collect unemployment?
Hope all is ok with you and I am nearing my 12 week end....at the end of Feb. Still going to docs and trying to get some preventative meds that don;t make a zombie out of me so I can go into work.

I have been in similar situations with my health and it really hurts. The feeling of not being dependable on top of being sick. My heart really goes out to you. Thinking of you and wishing you the best.

Hi, to all. I mostly seen on the lupus site. I have gout now and thought I would check you all out. FMLA covers all sickness, if your doctor fills the paper work out and notify you company. I work for Verizon, they are big on FMLA. With the FMLA the company is put on notice and cannot fire you....be aganist the law. Verizon, has tried to do that with me and can't because they now about
my issuses. Plus, the doctor is able to tell the company that you may be off for so much time. The company can' do nothing. Good luck....
