fatigue flare up after antibiotics?

I was just treated for kidney infection with cipro for a week. day after last pill I was plunged in to a fatigue flare up. too tired to pet my cat! doc making me stay home till Monday to rest. so now I am wondering, if infection gone, and tests showed it was, what it causing flare up? has this happened to anyone else? have to wonder why I had more energy with the infection than now. could it have been the antibiotic that caused the flare up?

I welcome your input.

I've had the experience that I've felt great right before I get hit with an infection. One time it was right before an abscess tooth, once before being hospitalized with pneumonia. My unproved theory is that my body goes into overdrive as it starts to fight the infection thus increasing my stamina. Then I crash as the infection wins the battle.

Anytime my body is going through a change with illness or medication I think that I might be heading toward a flare up. Taking antibiotics changes how my system functions, stopping them may have a boomerang effect. Hope this makes sense.

Hi there!  I found your post by doing a search on this very topic.  I just recently had a cold which turned into a sinus infection that I couldn't get rid of on my own.  The doc prescribed amoxicillin for me and within a couple of days of taking it I've had a major fatigue flare that is very persistent.  I have a couple of different theories on this, the first being that those with CFS have chemical sensitivites so it's possible that the body overreacts to the common side effects of antibiotics that others don't even notice? I also wonder too if yeast isn't proliferating in the body.  Amoxicillin is pretty bad for causing yeast overgrowth.  I think probably all antibiotics can cause this problem as they indiscriminately kill of bacteria, both good and bad.

Just some thoughts!  I am going to take some fluconazole after the awful antibiotic treatment is over with.

Hope you're feeling better by now!  I hate the fatigue sneak attacks!  :/

Interesting to hear about peaking before the crash. The month before I was hit with post viral fatigue I was running 7 minute miles, fastest I had run since college (I am 48), and feeling on top of the world.  That is one reason getting hit is so hard...you go from such a high level to basic suvival mode.  Unreal how these viruses can cause so many problems that last so darn long.  For me it has to be one of these two things:  either something is taking my energy, or I am unable to produce it like I was prior to the virus (suspected EBV). One thing I learned from this is I should not have taken good health for granted...

aare you having fatigue worse after the antibiotic ?

are you feeling better while ON the antibiotic?

cipro is known to have strong side effects. are any of your
symptoms like the side effects listed on the warning?

do you have lyme or bartonella.
levequan which is in same family as cipro is
sometimes given for bartonella. I wonder if you
are having a herx reaction?

Whilst I'm not sure on the issue of antibiotics and fatigue flare ups, I do believe that my body spends a heap of time fighting an infection and whilst I don't feel good, I generally manage until my body either fights it or succumbs to it. I recently spent 3 weeks feeling like crap fighting an infection and whilst it didn't leave me bedridden, I still felt quite unwell that whole time although with no specific symptoms and not sick enough to head to the Dr's (does this make sense?). So I agree with Quietly Here that our bodies can spend a great deal of energy fighting infection before crashing.

Having said that, I spent nearly 7yrs on and off antibiotics including spending a week in hospital on an antibiotic drip and I believe that this has been a major influence in getting CF. I now avoid antibiotics as much as possible and if I do have to take them in the future, I will be doing a liver cleanse straight after taking them because I believe they are very unhealthy for my body.

I think liongirl has it. Antibiotics aren't selective in the bacteria they kill - they kill everything and you need "good" bacteria. In the absence of good bacteria, bad bacteria are free to thrive.

I'd pay particular attention to cravings - if you're also craving simple carbs - from sweets to bread, then you have a clear indicator that yeast are running the show. This *will* cause feelings of depression and fatigue.

Your doctor will never tell you this, but you absolutely should not eat sweets or bread while on antibiotics - you need to replenish your system with pro-biotics - ie, eat fermented foods and good quality yogurt. Try this and I'm placing all my chips on the table - you will feel better.

Was doing Iv for Lyme and wasn't feeling great anyway but did some work outside. Been off everything for 2 weeks now but have been Lyme tired ever sense. Only did abx for 2.5 weeks. Is this Lyme I made mad or what. Blood tests look good

From what I have read CFS is likely due to malarial like bacteria such as Babesia microti and there are a few subtypes. Cipro does hit these as well as the bacteria causing your uti.
I highly suggest you see a Lyme literate MD to be checked. K
