Hi! I got a call from the nurse at my allergist's office. She said I tested postive for the Epstein Barr virus. Her recommendation was to take Lysine and Monolaurin and we would retest in a few months. (It is a naturopathic medical office.)

I have a phone call into my regular GP's office to get her interpretation of the results, but in the meantime I had a question:

Since most adults have been exposed to the Epstein Barr virus, does everyone test positive?

My concern is that this test might be a naturopathic "thing" like "yeast overgrowth" was in the 2000's. I fell for that one and taking the antifungals made my ulcerative proctitis (what was really wrong with me!) worse.

Any insights would be appreciated!

It's complicated. You have to ask the ND to give you an explanation appointment. there is a way to suspect a re-activation vs. the dormant virus, but too much to explain in one post. I did once have a
lab desription - know that you can search it yourself.

You need to ask if they tested for the IgG and IgM EBV. IgG will show if the infection is active and IgM just means past exposure to the virus.

I believe you have that backwards.

IgM is usually a recent/active infection

IgG is usually past exposure. But, from what I have seen IgG can also mean a reactivated infection.
