Hi littlesue,
Welcome to HealingWell and the CFS message board! I'm sorry to hear about your illness, but glad to meet you. We are united by this illness, and I believe can derive great benefits by supporting each other.
I've tried more alternative treatments than I can count, but unfortunately none helped very much. After I was first diagnosed (10 years ago), I was distrustful of the medical community, and sought out alternative treatments. Besides, my Dr at that time wouldn't do anything but prescribe antidepressants anyway. Gosh--acupuncture, shiatsu, other massage, vitamins and supplements, herbal treatments, lots and lots of herbal treatments, psychic healing, native American "medicine wheel" healing, crystal and other mineral "rocks" healing, Bach flower remedies, all kinds of diets-low fat, high protein, vegetarian, high unsaturated fatty acids diet, to name just a few, chiropractic, osteopathic, bunch of different spiritual practices, psychotherapy, art therapy, music therapy, lots of support groups, and who knows what I'm forgetting, I've done so many things....
So I've become very bitter, towards Drs for not treating me, and towards alternative treatments for not working. In my opinion, alternative treatments are most effective when used along with medical treatments, together. I never found an alternative treatment that lasted longer than 3 days, by itself. Very many people say they are helped by alternative practitioners, yet I've never known or heard of anyone being healed by them. And of course one may point out that no one has ever been healed of CFS. But what I point out is that is what many alternative pracatitioners take to the bank.
I'm sorry I have such a dim view of alternative treatments and practitioners. But I do emphasize that it is MY opinion, and as I do now, will always encourage others to develop their own opinions. I'm afraid, though, that the closer you look at alternatives, the more questions you will have. Although you may well find people replying to this message with referrals to pracatitioners who "are wonderful", there is no one, easy answer for everyone.
I do have an option to offer, which I feel good about suggesting. MDs and DOs who also practice alternatives. I think this very small corner of medicine, which is not officially a specialty, may well be on the way to becoming a respected specialty. It is called by a few different names, but the one used most often is CAM Complementary and Alternative Medicine. You will also see it called Integrative Medicine (integrating different practices). These are classically trained Drs (MDs and DOs) who have also educated themselves in the practice of Alternative treatments. Here are some links to organizations that appear to me to hold in high regard, both medicine and alternatives:
American WholeHealth: Integrative Medicine
National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine
On one of them, I think one can search for clinics and/or practitioners throughout the country.
I hope your search is productive, no matter where you ultimately search. And most of all, I hope you can find some treatments that help you to feel better. Good luck!
