You know I look around my house and I think geez a bombshell went off in here! The floor hasn't been vacuumed in days. The dishes are needing washed I have tons of laundry and I wonder......when am I going to be able to get to it all??? Ah well......anyone know a good maid that will work for cheap?? LOL

Guess its one of those things where you do what you can and let the rest go right? Good thing my Mom doesn't complain about how dirty my house is when she comes for visits he he.

Ok so next question............How do you all deal with the mounting housework that climbs to unmeasurable proportions around your homes?

Uh-oh. Methinks this thread will weave around a bit, if you catch my drift. (I mean like the hot tub thread did - or is it me who's causing all this havoc to begin with? LOL).

First - not been vacuumed in days. DAYS??? I can top that big time! Embarassed to say, but think long term. REAL long. And you can write your names on my furniture when you all come for the beach party! (hint of what's coming)

I deal with it like Scarlet O'Hara. Tomorrow. I'll think about it tomorrow. And then I sign online for the umpteenth time to talk to all of you.

The laundry and such I can do. Thankfully. But the big cleaning jobs - well, when you find that maid she'll have to travel from Wyoming to PA. Make sure she's got good suitcases. And lots of portable cleaning supplies.

Well, the last time I had to stay in the hospital I went down at home just after I had gotten out of the shower so I had a wet towel wrapped around my head and since I couldn't get up I had to (ever so slowly and painfully) SCOOT along the floor laying on my back w/my knees up until I got to where the phone was. So... I think my towel "swept" a little path through the dusty floor that day! heeheeheeheeheehee..... tongue I suppose I'll take what I can get, huh?

Ry- you might be onto something there, although minus the going down part. A fall? Ouch. I am terrified of falls. That's how I got injured. And getting in and out of the shower...hold my breath all the time.

And keeping the bathtub clean. I bought one of those long handled contraptions with a cleaning pad on the end. Works so-so but I guess better than nothing. Have to try to sweep it around the shower chair that I use. But it's never really clean the way it used to be.

Hey there ya go Ry.....never thought of that for a good sweeper! I have hubby clean the tub so that I can do my daily baths....they help so much in easing the pain.

Hubby does most of the cleaning, but again he is so tired after 14 hours at work that he really doesn't get into the deep stuff that really needs to be done. He tries to keep up on the laundry and geez wouldn't ya know it because its summertime and the bugs are out in force. Spiders have grown in my house which I hate! Them filthy little creatures are enough to make my skin crawl!

Lets not talk about house work!!! LOL I made a deal with myself just this morning in fact. Every day I am going to do some type of cleaning,
even if its just wiping down the kitchen table. My house has been getting away from me since this flare of mine started in May. I also work
full time and have a 2 1/2 year old. So imagine.... I just vacuumed on Sunday, Monday I did a load of laundry, today I cleaned off our
kitchen table that had piles of junk on it. Oh and did a load of laundry. My son was sick today so I was home but I stuck to my
deal and got at least something done. We'll see how long this lasts... hehehe Oh and dusting, that's been on my list forever but has
yet to get done. I was actually thinking of hiring a maid service to come in just once and do everything for me in hopes I would
then keep up with it. But I'll have to save up for that so it will be a little while.

I really do hire a maid to come in every two weeks and do the house work. That way I can do just one thing a day and not really keep up but at least not drown in my own filth. I don't know how I could possibly push a vacuum cleaner but one extra hour at work pays my housekeeper to do what would take me days of painful work to do myself.

Yeah, the falling part is never fun, but when my back goes, it just goes. There's no stopping it. Thankfully on most days I can remain upright, but those flares - oy! And they hit just out of the blue. I can't find any pattern - weather doesn't make a difference, stress doesn't seem to be a factor, I'm SO, SO careful about how I move, so that doesn't seem to be it, either. Oh well...

But, about the cleaning yeah

I am a MAJOR neat nick and I just abhor what this has done to the state of my house! I can usually do a light once over dusting one room and sweeping it before I'm done in, but it takes all day to recover from that and that is just tidying the house up. I would give anything to be able to afford to have someone come in a really deep clean the place.

I'm in for the beach party, though. I'll bring the little umbrellas for the beverages. tongue

You know what I do when the chores pile up?? Make the kids do them :0) I do what I can like vacuum, dishes and dusting but the kids need to do the rest. I absolutely HATE a dirty bathroom but I can't bend down to clean the toilet or tub so I have to wait for my daughter to get to it. In the meantime, it just festers in me just knowing that the bathroom is dirty. I hope that didn't come over as toooooo neurotic did it?? :)

Well, PaLady, I guess that's one thing we should put on the list for "plusses" to living alone... The bathroom doesn't get quite so dirty as with a whole family (especially male persons!), right? Ummm....let's see... That would be item number.... 1 on the plus side, right? tee hee devil

Sherry - here's the test to see if you're too neurotic. Do you know who I'm talking about when I say "Monk" is my hero? Have you seen that show? You can actually go on that website and take this test to see how "Monk"ish you are and well, let's say that it would be pretty hard to beat my score! So you're in good company here! redface

MMMNAVY, when you find a maid let's just give them a map of all our locations and they can go from place to place to place, okay? And while they're cleaning we can keep ourselves busy with beach parties and hot-tub parties and the Daquari's with little umbrellas. yeah

I love Monk and actually I know someone who is just like him. I can only shake my head and think, boy I'm glad I'm not THAT neurotic! :) You ever use those pick 'er uppers - the things with the handles and grabby knobs at the end? I can't remember what they're called lol But I've been thinking about getting one of them but not sure how practical they are when it comes to cleaning.

Red - I used one of those after my back fusion and it was a godsend. I was so glad I bought it before my surgery and had it at home waiting. That little item was worth its weight in gold. I got so good I could even pick up a dime. I came home from the hospital to be living alone, and I never realized how much I'd moan whenever something slipped out of my hands on the floor. But that little whachamacallit -- an A+ item!

Yep, Ry, don't have to worry about the toilet seat up in the middle of the night! Gotta think of the small things....although I'd love to clone one of the great guys Scarred and a few others are married to.

Oh, lol! I DO have one of those picker-uppers! One of my friends actually got one for me shortly after my first hospital stay. :-) It is handy for picking up lighter things, but to be honest I don't use it as often as I thought I would. It is long enough that it isn't really comfortable to bring up whatever I've picked up to my hand (does that make sense?). It's okay if I'm picking something up to set it on the couch or a shelf or something, but to pick things up to hold onto it doesn't work well for me.

I need a maid, too. I am a very horrible housekeeper, and I LOATHE cleaning, plus my body would not allow it anyway. When I get a job I can do someday, I am going to hire a cleaning lady to come in and do cleaning at least once a week or once every two weeks.

I worry a lot about getting in and out of the shower or the tub. I'm scared one day I will slip and fall and hit my head hard. My bathroom is not "handicapped accessible". I need a rail to hold on to while getting in and out of the tub/shower as well as a shower seat.

Its called an ez reacher. Can be picked up at any medical supply store or through the internet. Very handy for those of us that cannot reach down and pick things off of the floor as well as reaching things far above your head. I was given one when I had my first back surgery and even though it does not do well with picking up heavy things...it does help with reaching socks, trash, books, papers and other things that day to day life does not allow us to bend and pick up.

I also received two other things while at the hospital. A sock aide which allows me to put my socks on my feet with ease. the other thing was a cool long armed scrubber for my back, but I lost that a long time ago and wish I had it back. I too have a chair for the shower which I am seriously thinking of having hubby take out of storage. and of course there is too my seat riser for the toilet which I hate having to sit that low.

I thought I was the only one who used the high hat on the toilet seat! (Ry - one of the other "benefits" of living alone - LOL) I got the shower chair and high hat after my surgery, and you know those were the two item the insurance wouldn't pay for even though I had 100% coverage for "durable medical equipment". They're considered "comfort" items. Yea, right. I don't know what i'd have done without them when I first got home, and whlle I'd love to get rid of the shower chair I fear I never will. Like Lucia, my bathroom isn't handicapped equipped and I can't afford to have any changes made. So the chair stays. And I feel like I've aged 30 years.

So much for the "golden years." eyes

I don't know if it's available at a store near you, but at a store near me, there is this bathtub rail that costs about $30 or $40 and it's not permanent, you can attach it to the side of the tub yourself, tighten the screw and there ya go! And when you move, you can remove it.

Exactly PA! Mine was covered through WC of WY so I didn't have to pay a dime on that and got to keep the toilet riser and shower chair forever. But I do not believe that they are or should ever be considered comfort items, as people with CP need these things. I cannot afford to change my house either and having the extra items are a blessing for me.

Which is why if hubby takes this job offer, we will have to find a house that will be easy for both of us to care for and easy for me to get around in. I am not real hip on stairs and it seemed like most of the homes we were interested in had either stairs going to a basement or it was a tri-level. So this will be a difficult adjustment for me to handle and I will be eyeballing these home quite hard to make sure that I am comfortable in them. Three or four of them had bedrooms on the main floor, so I like that idea as well. Save the top floor for guests right?

I've got both a high-hat and a shower chair, too. I don't use the hat often, but usually after a hospital stay I have to b/c I can't bend far enough to get up and down from the regular seat. The shower seat is definitely a life-saver, like you said! I use it quite often as it makes it possible to shower even on a not so great day. And I'm not yet 40 and haven't had back surgery! Don't feel badly! You aren't alone. :-)

That's an important point - the stairs issue. Since you'll be moving anyway, if it was me I'd plan for the future, so to speak, and make sure I had a house that I could get around in now - and adapt easily to future needs. Stairs wouldn't cut it, although maybe a basement wouldn't hurt, especially if your laundry stuff could still be on the main floor. Keep those wise thoughts in mind when you're house hunting. You'd hate to have to move or do major rennovations in the future, right?

Ry - I took he high hat off for a day and nearly killed myself! LOL (kinda) I have an older toilet that's really low, and of course I'd become used to the high hat, so I put it back on. i probably should take it off, though, as on the rare times I have company if there are any males it could be a problem! But people have to make their way through the rest of this mess to find the bathroom! And speaking of company, I have cousins coming the first week in August and they're renting a cottage very close to me, which means they'll be over to visit. YIKES! I need a Bionic Cleaning Woman and Superman!

The vacuuming to me is the worst thing. Something about the way it pulls your muscles leaves me nearly incapacitated. The floors here...well, maybe I've got to do Ry's towel trick?

LOL! Yes, PaLady. Here's what you should do... Just pull one of your fluffy robes and a pair of the fluffy slippers off that truck, then wrap a towel around your head. Don't fall like I did - just carefully position yourself on your back (knees up) and use your feet to push yourself around the floor. If the towel is a little damp, it will be the mop, then the robe and slippers can dry mop after it! Presto! hahahahahaha tongue

Seriously, I know what you mean - just preparing for company is enough to put me in the hospital if I'm not careful. You be careful - don't over do. Hey, here's an idea! Let's have the next party at YOUR place! We can ALL get the robes and slippers and towels on and away we go! We'll call it a shuffleboard party! tee hee
