Hey everyone. I am withdrawing off of oxycontin. Does anyone know how long it lasts or have any advice to help me through this. I have a three year old I am trying to  watch at the same time.  I havent slept in 48 hours. I am taking a vitamin complex. Please help fast!

You need medical attention. I don't know what to say because I
don't know how much oxycontin you've been taking or the reason
for your taking it.
All I can say is ... GET MEDICAL ATTENTION.

I havent been on it but maybe a month for chest pain but I think it is making my chest pain worse. I have tried seeking medical advice but no one was helpful. They saw me as an "Addict." I work in the medical field, they dont teach us this in school but there has to be some one out there who has gone through this.

I am on 10 mg every 16 hours. I have tried tapering. I took 2 yesterday and the withdrawal is still horrible.

I will be waiting for you to get some answer. I believe the pain is something
besides withdrawal. Seek Medical Attention.

Welcome to the forum on chronic pain. I would agree with Pamela, though, that this withdrawal should be done under medical supervision. There could be a lot of other variables, and chest pain could be caused by many things. If you're in the medical profession, you know there can be a lot of complicating factors for each individual. But withdrawaing on your own can be dangerous. We can offer support and even though some of us are also in the medlcal field, we're not doctors, and not here to offer medical advice.

I totally understand that. There is a waiting list for help Oct 22. I dont have a choice. They are not refilling my perscriptions and cant get in for help anywhere. I am staying with my parents who are trying to help me and I have withdrawn from hydrocodone before which was worse than this. But I thought mayybe someone could give me a little advice not a medical diagnosis or anything. This just all sucks and the doctors are not helping. Believe me otherwise I would take it.

I don't advise cold turkey withdrawl - but have done it. Expect to feel (slightly) better after about 72 hours and when finally can sleep. Also ginger ale or tea to fluch your system will help.

I know doctors and the health care system sure do make it a challenge for us, but whoever wrote the script has some responsibiity for this abrupt withdrawal. I'd at least telephone that doc in the morning and ask for instructions to help you through withdrawal, and possibly he/she might even be willing to call you in some non-opiates to help you. If there's no response, I'd ask the head pharmacist you use if he/she has any advice for you.

I will try tea. I am now experiencing the hot to cold rapid changes and the anxiety is horrible.  The doctors are not helping me and so basically it is this or the ER. I will try to call the doctor but they told me to just weane myself off, well it doesnt  seem to work.  Thanks for the help.  If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know.

Hello H.W.,

Most of the time there is reason for a doctor to stop a patient so abruptly with pain meds. Two years ago I had a spinal cord stimulator put in my back, the pain was horrible and I ended up Finishing my monthly prescription morphine 5 days early. I had been taking it for more than 1 and a half years. I called in for another prescription and the doctor denied it. Within 12 hours I was withdrawing. After 24 hours it was so sevear my wife took me to the emergency room. Once there after 4 hours of waiting they took me in and got all my info of why and so forth. They called my doctor who refused them again and told me they are not set up to take care of a morphine addict.

  After they gave me a shot of dillaudid and had me wait another 9 hours in there and had me sent to a detox center. I stayed there for 5 days with withdrawal meds to calm me down.

  Never in my life had I experienced such absolute pain and agony in which I felt those days. I had to come home and tell my childeren where daddy was for a week while I looked like death. I will never in my life forget it. I have never taken any illegall meds in my life. All have been prescription not that it makes it any better when abusing prescription pain meds.

I tell this time of my life, not to ridicule anybody only because sometimes I feel bad for people who unknowing get themselves into a bad situation from even a worse situation.

I still have to take many meds to control my rsd and have a feeling I will for a quite a while. Pain and all the problems it comes with is something that nobody I know can control. I just try my best, to live and learn, like everyone else.

Withdrawl is not a pleasant experience. But, it sometimes is inevitable. I struggle with it practically every month b/c I take an extra dose at 3 AM when I wake up in excruciating pain and can't get back to sleep. Therefore, I run out of meds approx. fives days before I can get my prescription refilled. As I look after my Dad who has denmentia, like you kshields, care for your daughter, it isn't possible to put your life on hold for 72 hours when it will begin to improve. I do know if you can get to a detox centre, someimes they have outpatient programs where they'll give you something to ease your pain. I wish all the best to you. It's a catch 22, you need the meds for the pain, the meds end up causing you more pain.

When I was going off Oxycontin I called the Pharmacists all hours of the day and
night for advice. I can't remember their advice. This happened in another town.
My Pharmacists now are not so helpful. In fact, they are down right scary.

Chronic pain is so difficult to deal with, it's nice to know we can read,listen and learn from everyone here at healing well. Sometimes we even might find comfort and understanding, just to get by the next day.

From what I have read before....not personal experience, warm tea, hot baths or jacuzzi/hot tub, vitamins (I believe it was thiamine), gatorade (or the like) to replete your fluids, for sleep valerian root. For diarrhea AND to relieve many withdrawal symptoms take Imodium or the store generic that has loperimide in it as the active ingrediant....this is classified as an opioid so, although a much lower dose than hydrocodone or oxicontin, it does help a lot. I remember there was something else for use for the runny nose, but cannot remember what it was.

Have you tried calling around to see if you can find a Suboxone doctor? If you go to the Suboxone websight they have a place where you can type in your zip code and they give you a list of doctor's in your area. I did it and I got in to see a doctor the very next day. But I only did it cause I absoutly refused to go back to my pain specialist cause he called me fat, when I'm only 150lbs, even one day he asked me if I was pregnant, which made me so mad cause I dont look pregnant and I dont consider myself fat either. It costs alot to see a sub doctor but well worth it, it even took care of ALL of my pain issues.

I am a new member. I suffer with chronic pain from a myriad of problems. I'll list some of the important ones, but I clould fill a book with them all. I have a herniated disc, lumbar 5, stenosis, spinal osteoarthritis, cervical fusion, non-malignant tumor located on the left side of lumbar 5 with the nerves growing through and wrapped around the tumor, spondyliosos(sp?), aggressive degenerative disc disease, sciatic nerve left leg, diabetic neuropathy in feet, beginning in hands, permanent nerve damage to right hand and wrist resulting from four carpel tunnel surgeries (doc's say nothing can be done to repair, too damaged), RSD in left foot (thankfully in remission now), severe osteoarthritis in both knees (now getting the Synovasc treatment), severe osteoarthritis in both hips, chronic edema problem, legs and feet swell three times their size, so bad sometimes they weep. I think these are the worst of it...I'm in so much pain sometimes I have even thought of giving up the ghost...I go to a pain clinic and the meds they give me, Avinza 120mg, 1 every 24 hours and Lortab (10/500) one every 6-8 hours. Well, I'm like tyno...I have to take more Lortab because alot of times I can't bear waiting six hours. So, I'm in the position she gets in. I have now run out and cannot get my prescription until Thursday the 16th. This is the first time I have ever completely ran out of meds, I always managed to keep a few back just for this type of emergency. As I don't use my meds to get high, those days are gone, all I want is to be at least able to ease 50% of this horror. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect? The last dose of 20mg hydrocodone I had was at 10:30 am, the morning. The pain is already increased greatly, what will happen next? Is there anything I can do to help the withdrawal? I am so frightened...Any advice will really be appreciated.

I'll give the same advice to you as I have to others: you need to get some medical supervision for the withdrawal. It's dangerous to just quickly withdraw on your own. It sounds like your pain is being undertreated and you need to get in to see your PM doc and ask about changing your dose. Hopefully, you didn't take too many and run out too early. Have you had any addiction problems in the past? If you've followed your doc's instructions over time, he/she hopefully will have some trust in you (I know that's not always true) if you explain what happened. It's obviously not something you can keep doing, and you'll need something for pain.
