David,
So glad to hear that the lavender helped you and that you got some sleep! I have almost the same routine as Frances. I absolutely love lavender, I find it so relaxing. I burn an aromatherapy lamp every night with lavender essential oil. I also drink lavender & camommile tea. Before I go to bed, I spray my pillow & bed with a lavender essential oil spray, and sometimes even put the essential oild directly on my pillowcase (I actually did that last night & accidentally put waaaay too much on it. It was so strong that I had to change my pillow case three times!). I wish we had lavender farms around here, like you, I'd probably buy out the whole place! Guess I'll just have to stick to my essential oils.
I also sometimes use rescue remedy spray, which is bach flower essences. It helps to calm me down when I'm really anxious & can also help with sleep. Melatonin, which is actually a brain hormone, is sold over the counter in the US and is also supposed to help. I bought some the other month & I think that I did sleep better when I tried it, but I also discovered that I can't take it because it really messes with my eyes & I couldn't see straight the next day. I've heard something about valerian root too, although I've never tried it. There are other OTC sleep products as well. If all else fails, you can always get a prescription sleep aid from your doc. I've been on and off them in the past, but I haven't found one that I really like.
I'm trying some new chinese herbs tonight that my acupuncturist gave me that are supposed to help with sleep, calming & relaxation, so hopefully I'll sleep better tonight as well.
