Two weeks ago after decorating a Christmas tree, I experienced severe back pain.  The next morning I could hardly get out of bed.  I went to urgent care.  They did the preliminary tests to check nerve function and a urine sample to rule out anything with the kidneys and sent me on my merry way with a pain killer and a diagnosis of back muscle strain. As the days went on the pain increased and localized itself to my flank and reaching around my right side.  I went to my GP.  He did the same tests and an xray and concluded I SPRAINED my back.  He gave me an antiflammitory/pain shot and a 5 day follow up script of the same.  The meds help some, but I continue to get shooting pains in my flank and side as if I am being stabbed by a burning knife and then it is twisted inside of me.  The pain completely inables me to move until is subsides.  Has anyone here ever sprained their back?  If so, what are your symptoms and what do you do to relieve the pain.  I was told I could have symptoms for up to 6 weeks:(.

Have you tried Physical Therapy yet? That's what's worked for me in the past (and pretty much everyone else I've known who's sprained back muscles). Try the PT. If it is too intolerable, see if there is anywhere around you where you can do aqua therapy, where you do the exercises in a heated pool. It will take time to heal, though, even with the exercises. Best thing to do is avoid further injury & work on gently restrengthening the muscle(s) that was injured.
Also, you could try putting warm washcloths or a heating pad on the area that hurts. It prob. won't get you better any quicker, but might lessen the pain in the meanwhile.

I have a back muscle that is torn and could take 6-8 months to heal. Lidocaine patches help. There is also a Tens Unit that shocks the muscle and helps your body respond....i highly recommend it. I take Somas for muscle spasms and ibprofun and also oxycodone.

You may want to see a chiropractor too. it helped me
