Sorry gonna add in my 2cents before I no longer have computer access.
Alcie you said ~~>"10000 units a day for extended time is toxic according to recent medscape report.
The formula for raising D, from the report, is: for every 1ng low take 100 uniys of D. For my level of 18, that means 4000units to get to 58 - low end of 50 - 90.
I take 2000 units AM, another if I don't work outside."
....perhaps "toxic" (IE the body will dump excess via urine or diarreah) for a "normal person." And the "forumla" is for normal consumption for the average person....But it also includes ALL sources of D including food, sunshine, etc. Not just amount via suppliment. It is an "overall" formula.
It just doesnt work for people who need more vitamin D or D2 added for medical reasons. Not for me at any rate. There are other people like me. I have an absorption rate of 0.0026 (0.0025) (which happened to caused osteoperosis and other areas to "crumble" like chalk. But NOT to be confused with malabsorption.) and hypoparathyroidism. I HAVE to consume 50,000 UI Drisdol per week. There are times when I must consume more depending on lab reports, but NEVER any less. The consequences are... life threatening. It will be this way for the rest of my life. Also, I cannot consume caffiene. Cannot consume seperate calcuim suppliments or calcium containing "medicine" (Tums).
Just wanted you to know that there are reasons why some people must take large amounts daily for their entire lives. I am one of those people.
Sometimes when you read reports or on the internet, it seems so cut and dry. Must remember that it is usually compared to "normal" or other wise "healthy" people. Also, when speaking in terms of #of cases....it is compiled of all "reports" from the united states for the target year. There are billions of people in the US.
Here is the report in question~~~> http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/819426-overview
~~>"
The 2007 Annual Report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers' National Poison Data System document the total number of exposures for each class of vitamins, the number of patients with major adverse outcomes, and the number of fatalities from that ingestion,3 as follows:
.....Vitamin D - 596 total exposures, 1 major outcome, and 0 deaths."
