Costochondritis

When I had costochondritis my doctor prescribed a Methylpred Pak, it is a glucocorticoid a type of steroid you take 6 tablets the first day (2 before breakfast, on after lunch and one after supper, and two before bed) the second day it is one less tablet, and each following day it is one less tablet and the sixth day you only take on tablet. It worked great for me. Steroids reduce inflamation, and I found within two days the pain was gone! So ask your doctor about Medrol Pak. of course if you have a bad cold or an infection or anything like that they probably will not put you on it, as it lower your autoimmune system. But talk to your doctor about it, my doctor said that was a pretty common treatment for that.

Well Patti steroids are about the best anti inflammatory there is. Predinsone is about the most useful one around it is used for everything from Asthma to Ulcertive Colitis. But with that said they can be dangerous, and are not to be taken lightly, as they can and do have some pretty nasty side affects especially in high doses. But for most people at lower doses it can really be a miracle drug! The low dose 4mg tablet pak worked very well for me with costochondritis!

I really don't know to much about the  Homeopathic remedies, but what little I have heard about them they do seem to work for allot of people!  Does that Traumed or Arnica cream work pretty well? I know of course you can't go wrong with the alternating of Heat and Ice!

I never took your post as being negative, and I did not write mine properly if I came off like I did! ( I hope that makes sense) That is one of the hard things about posting you only have printed words, you can't hear tone or inflection in a persons words, like you can when you hear them speaking, and you can't see a persons facial expressions or body movements, which also add to expression in communication. I often regret that! As I tend to speak with my arms and hands! In one public speaking class I took, my instuctor asked me to put my hands in my pockets and give a short talk, do you know I could not speak a coherent sentence! Then he told me to do it again using my hands! What a difference! Maybe that is why it takes me so long to type a post! I just can't get my hand and arm movements into my writings! I know I am rambling now! Anyway please don't be sorry about your post I know what you met and I do agree!

You are also right about Costochondritis, it is often very difficult to treat! For most people it just goes away on its own, but that is of little help while one is waiting for it to go away! Acupuncture is something I personally can't tolerate, it causes me muscle spasms but that is another story and I have written enough, ( I also tend to be a little long winded in my writings) Smile

Well justme1403 it does sound like you have had quite a year!  although the costochondritis is definitely uncomfortable, and the tonsillitis can be painful and potentially dangerious,  the pericarditis is just down right scary! and maybe that is why your doctor hasn't put you on steroids already. I sure would talk to him/her about it though. I do know they don't like putting you on steroids if you have any type of infection going on. As for  your question, it can affect any of your cartilages  and the front part connecting all your lower ribs is  costal cartilage  anyway! But again I would refer you to your Doctor, as I know it can be very painful and make breathing difficult and your Doctor should be able to give you something to help it!

Hi,

I am not sure if it was brought up but I actually took Glucosamine and Chrondritin or Glucosamine with MSM and it helped with healing. It did not solve the pain issue right away as it takes time to work but I found it worked well for me. I did take anti-inflammatories as well as prednisone but found they did not help at all. I also took fish oil pills with my meals in the beginning. The only negative to the fish oil pills is that they can cause you to become somewhat gassey. I also used a heating pad, which I found helped trmemendously. I hope you are feeling better.

I have the same problem as you....words without hands just don't work for me lol. Anyway, no worries...I appreciate you and if I ever insult ANYONE.....smack me in a post. I admire you and all of my other friends here on HW, this site keeps me going!
