Raining here

I woke up to almost unbearable pain the  morning. It is storming outside. My back is horrible. I had a hard time getting out of bed to go get something to drink to take a Lortab and phenergan. This is how I felt the day of surgery!!! I sure wasn't expecting this. I am almost in tears.

I want to get in the tub and soak in hot water. I took a shower last night. I am a little scared to get in there though. I am not suposed to bend or twist. I talked with my husband. He said he would help me get in and out if it is what I want to do.I just don't know what to do.

Have all of you noticed these major changes on stormy days? How do you deal with it?  Any suggestions?

I feel your pain, I don't think you should get in the tub...maybe a nice hot shower would do the trick!

Oh yes, the Human Barometer...that's me as well.  It's strange, but I can tell u when it's gonna rain before the weatherman can... That's my new job, a meteorologist!!!

The rain makes me stiff, sore, achy, creaky, you name it...But most of all...in pain!!! I tend to sleep more when its raining, so the longer I stay in bed...the more I hurt....

It's done nothing but rain rain rain here in Nashville....YUKK!!!

Yes , the rain does seem to make the stiffening worse and increase my pain levels. Walking, for the first few days is going to make it seem like the pain levels are increasing, in fact, they probably will, but push past it, and keep walking. If you need to cut, it back to 5 minutes two or three times today, but still walk some.....it does get better, but this is the hard part about back surgeries. Your back muscles have been cut, and they are rebelling big time, both because they were cut, and also because you haven't really used them since you had the surgery, so they are screaming, don't make me do this.....but you have to.....
I remember crying, sobbing in fact, many times post op....I had no idea how painful it was going to be....I do understand, in fact many of us do, of exactly how you are feeling......

I know what you mean about the pain and the barometer. See my earlier post on that subject. I have found that when I get in that situation the pain meds I take (oxycodone) have very little effect. I rest and use ice packs which seem for me to do more good than anything else.

It's been raining here all day too! Yuck! The only time I like the rain is during summer thunderstorms. Or at least when it is warm out. None of this cold & icky stuff. It's funny, sometimes I feel like my pain is worsened by the weather, and sometimes I feel like it doesn't affect me at all! I can't explain it. I do know that bad low pressure systems cause the inflammation of my ocular muscles, which certainly doesn't help things, but other than that... I can't predict it! It is usually my shoulders that are affected more than my eye, though, although sometimes that is bothered too. Lately, a very minor ankle fracture that I had when I was a kid (but never had treated) has been bothering me. I have no idea why. Usually the only time that it hurts is if I have been horseback riding, and especially jumping, for several hours, as I can't quite get that foot to position right in the stirrups. But I haven't ridden in several years, since my shoulder surgeon yelled at me (for my own good, as it I were to fall off and land on either of my shoulders, especially in this one position that I will never be allowed to put my shoulders into, I would basically tear all of my ligaments & pull my shoulder(s) out of the joint, at the very least). I think that it has something to do with the weather though, as other than that, nothing has changed.

Anice, the combination of the rain and the cold are not easy to handle. As Skeye said, when it is warm and it rains it does not seem to have the same effect. There are times I have to turn on the electric blanket, jump (not literally) into a hot shower and then as soon as the hot water does its trick, I climb into a hot bed and allow the heat to continue to ease the pain. Since I live in sunny Oregon (again not literal) I have to deal with this on a regular basis. I grew up in the cold country of Montana but now this kind of cold does me in. People in Oregon don't tan, they rust. We refer to the sun as a UFO. The umbrella is the state bird. Anyway, I know what you are saying and this adds to my discomfort as well. Stay warm, dry and realize it won't rain forever. Be blessed.
