Nerve damage pain

shocked  Some of you know that my husband fell off our roof and broke his nose and his hip. He seems to be having alot of nerve damage pain in his foot now, is there anything we can do to help lessen the pain he says it's like his foot is on fire. He went back to his dr. this week and he told him that the nerve damage may always be there. I'm wondering if there's anything we can do other than using an ice pack on it. I hope everyone is having a pain free day or at least a low pain day.

I also use neurontin for nerve pain and it does help but everyone is different.  I am also on narcotic pain meds but I don't tell people and they are hidden in my home.  Definately have to safe guard the pain meds.  I too think a new doctor is needed soon!!  Good Luck

He should talk to his doctor about nuerontin or cymbalta. I have severe diabetic neuropathy which is nerve damage caused by diabetes and take cymbalta and have had really good results. Some people don't and have better luck with the nuerontin. It is basically a trial and error thing.

Aunt Kay, sure hate to hear hubby is having this on top of everything else. Whew!! The others are so right, yes there is medications for nerve pain, your dr is not up on things. Another drug they are successfull with is Lyrica. I have non diabetic neuropathy in both my feet and hands and Lyrica has really helped with that. Perhaps your PCPC will help with this if the dr seeing him now refuses to.

So sorry he's having these problems. I have CRPS 2 in my left arm. I've had 5 nerve related surgeries on it and still have radial neruopathies in both arms. Nerve pain from injury is different from that of disease such as diabetes. Have your husband's doctor give him a referral to a Pain Management Specialist. There are things that can be done. Medications can help, I'm on Topamax and it cut the nerve pain by about 30%. Lidocaine patches may help him. I also have a tens unit which because his pain is from injury may be a viable solution for him. Get a referral to a pain specialist or a neurologist as a first step. An ENMG may be able to locate the exact nerves that are damaged and where. There are many things that can help. Not that your husband's doctor isn't a good doctor, he just isn't the person to be seeing for this very specialized problem.

Hey Kay,

It looks like you have gotten lots of good advice here.  I have nerve pain from MS which is slightly different than neuropathy.  It is from the CNS instead of the peripheral nervous system.  I haven't really found anything that works for me.  I am very sorry he is suffering from this.  I too, have heard cymbalta gives some people relief. 

I do hope this is temporary and that he can find relief very soon.  Good luck!!!

I don't know which one is worse the nerve pain or the other pain. I have both and my vote is still on the fence with it.

You need another doctor there as so many things you can try whether it be medication changes or nerve blocks. I have had 9 nerve blocks for my nerve pain. (in the last 3 months) It has helped about 25% not alot but enough, any relief is better then none. My nerve pain at the moment has altered my mood. Sometimes I feel it will never go away and it will not. It can be so frustrating to deal with any pain. We all know this.

My advice is to seek a 2nd and possible 3rd opinion. When it comes to pain i believe we all should search for answers. Life is miserable when dealing with pain. A persons thinking has to remold itself to learn to deal.

I will pray for your husband and I hope he finds some relief.
