Skeye, Wow Oregon, I've never been there before. I haven't traveled too many different states anyway. There is a whole world out there, I've never seen! Anyway, I hope the conference is something that you will enjoy and it won't be too boring. Just think of it for all the knowledge you'll get out of it. Please be careful and be aware of your enviroment. Are you driving or flying? I will miss hearing from you. I always enjoy reading your posts. I wish you a great trip. And I hope your pain levels are very low if any at all. Let us know when you get back and how it went. What is the conference on, if you don't mind my asking? Good luck and I'll be looking forward to hearing the details when you get back.

I've been out there once and I loved flying in - you can see the mountain tops (Mount Hood on one side, and the sister mountain to Mt. St. Helen's on the other (can't remember the name). You might even be able to see Mt. Rainer. But when we were coming in for a landing the sun was setting and as we were just above the clouds it was gorgeous! We east coast folk don't usually see such mountain top over the clouds! I'm sure fatherjohn can give you more details.

If you can drive along the Columbia River Gorge, you can drive out to Mt. Hood and it's not too far from Portland. I was in Stevenson, Washington (on the other side of the river from Oregon) for a conference in the 1990's and got to explore. A friend and I went up to the Mt. Hood area. You can drive to some scenic overlooks. The Columbia River Gorge is known for it's windsurfing at certain times of the year - you'd never figure it just being a river and all, but the way the winds blow up the gorge attracts windsurfers from around the world. I don't know if this is the "season" though.

I also took some time and drove a couple of hours up to see Mt. St. Helens. Just had to. I drove all the way to the highest overlook point and it was fascinating. Fascinating to see the lush green, the new road, and then cross a bridge and drive into the area they have left to "heal" on its own. It is like being in another world. A grey world, but with sprouts of life showing themselves in between the fallen trees. And then at the top there's a visitor center and you can walk around a bit, sit outside and have a sandwhich and watch the crater puff. Seriously, I think they called them "steam eruptions". Looks like someone is sending smoke signals. But that's just something that fascinated me!

Are you going to meet up with fatherjohn? I don't know how far away he is.

I hope you have a wonderful time, and that your poster presentation is well-received (I know it will be!). You are truly an impressive young woman. There is a plan for your life. I don't know what it is, but your talent will serve the world in some way.

I often have used the disposable cameras on my trips. Course that was before all the digital stuff (I don't own a digital camera!) but the disposables took some great photos, and I never had to worry if I lost one! I got some that took panoramic shots and some people couldn't believe that they were from a disposable.

Fight for that window seat! And give fatherjohn a hug for us all!!!!

People meeting up on the West Coast, and in Boston, and in Arizona. I've gotta get some of you to come to the vicinity of Pittsburgh/Buffalo/Cleveland!

The weather in the Portland area is warmer than usual. They are expecting a high of around 100 on Sunday. We are going to break a record of days over 90 for July. Portland is between the mountains and the coast so you can have both in an hour from Portland. There still is snow on the mountains and the views coming in are great. I am looking forward to meeting you Skeye.

Awe, no fair fatherjohn!!! You get to meet practically everyone on here (well, ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration ) and then you won't share???

Does anyone on here own an airplane? If so, can some of us hitch a ride to the west coast? We'll be good!

If you were here in Portland at the Fishery Management Council meeting that's right by the airport, we could have met face to face. lol. Their office is located in my building. I know they host meetings quarterly.

Too bad I wasn't at work this week or I could have bumped into you. Instead I was still suffering the effects of landing on my tailbone twice in a week. And well, it's kinda hard to crunch numbers at a desk all day when you can't sit down.

Besides the weather was too nice to be at work anyway.

I picked Skeye up and she joined my wife, daughter and myself for an afternoon ride. It was great to see her wade out into the pacific ocean. Opps, I wasn't going to tell. We did have a great time as she is such a blast. Piercings, I did not know you were in Portland. maybe some time we can meet as well. I moved from Portland  a couple of years ago and I am about 1 1/2 hours south. Stay cool this weekend.
