Tooth from hell!

Hello all,

As some of you may have noticed, I haven't been around for a few days, Sorry about that! After having my tooth drilled out last week and having a temp filling put in, we had unexpected company for a couple days. A friend and her husband of my wife who she used to work with moved away to Kansas a few years ago but had stayed in touch w/ my wife ever since was in Fla. visiting and in Orlando which is only a little over an hour from us. My wife insisted that they come up for a while. We had a nice time w/ them for a couple days but my tooth started hurting again and has just gone down hill all week. Yesterday after our company left I called my new dentist who said come in right away. They took a bunch of xrays and after checking my gums and did some other yearly check-up stuff while I was waiting for the dentist which was nice of them and free w/ my insurance anyway. He then came in and gave my mouth a full check-up and cancer screaning (something my old dentist never did!) then checked the bad tooth. He told me that I had two options, pull it out or get a root canal since the tooth obviously wasn't going to get better w/ just a new filling and crown.

In the past when ever this option was given to me, I simply had it pulled out as the thought of paying all that $$$$$ to save a tooth seemed extravigant at the time. I've never had a root canal before but since the dentist told me that this tooth is still a "working tooth" meaning, there's a tooth still below it, I should try to keep it as it will be cheaper than getting a fake one. My wife agreed I should try to save the tooth so I have an emergency apt. w/ a specialist tomorrow, the same day and time I'm supposed to go to Social Security for my first meeting for disability!

Jeeze> Do I take care of the raging pain in my mouth, neck and head or go to my SSD apt. and maybe stall or even hurt my chances of getting it??? This is how things usually play out for me, it never seems to just be simply one thing at a time. This seems to happen to alot of us CP'ers, dosen't it?? Yesterday after going to the dentist, I called my lawer's office and got ahold of my "caseworker" after trying to call her for two days. OMG, what a peice of work she is!! > what have I got myself into this time? I asked her what I should do? Answer> "I don't know!" Well, will it hurt my chances if I cancel my apt. w/ SS? > "I don't know!" What the %^()*!@#$$ do you know, how to take my $$$ if I win? Some chance of that happening w/ you helping me!!! So I have this morning to descide what I should do?? This tooth has been bugging me for about a month now and now the pain pills I take do nothing! I'm a crankypuss and I'm whining at Y'all! I've been up every night this week w/ this tooth and it's caused my neck to flair up much worse than the normal everyday pain> I'm sure Y'all know what I'm talking about (normal everyday CP <vs> flair-up pain) GRRRRR!!!

As usual, I'm sorry for going off> Oh, there goes Pete again> w/  it's all about me again!!

I'm just frustrated, tired & cranky!!

Awe Pete,
so very sorry your having to face a root canal. Try calling the dentist doing the root canal and ask if you could get in
at a different time as another emergency has come up...Just don't put it off too long as the pain will get worse
if left untreated...the root canal could take up to 2 -3 hours depending on how bad it is, my last root canal, last year took 2 hours,
they had to use kid sized equipment as I have a very small mouth and so it took extra time too, it's not an easy procedure...
also ask for or if you'll need an antibotic...
I'm so sorry you need a root canal!

     Good morning *huggs* I am glad you stopped by! But holy cow, I thought for sure you said "I will have to try to take it easy" <~~  

 

      I would call the destist, if I were you, and be honest. Tell 'em you in a bit of a pickle. Something like ~~>"I need this fixed, but have my first appointment with the SS Office." . Maybe you can be worked in at the end of the day? Also, Orajel makes these little "liquid sticks" . They have helped me termendously! .. slaughtered the spelling of that word... !!Off track!! Gosh I sure hope one or the other can be re schedualed!

I agree with Susie about keeping the SSD appoinment, but it's probably too late now anyway for you to read this. But I'd suggest calling your new dentist (the one who has seen you) and asking for an antibiotic now. If you're like me, you may have an infection that's also driving the pain. I know my tooth pain increases without the antibiotic - as well as my pain meds.

But SSD is likely much, much harder to reschedule than the dentist.

Thanks Everyone! Y'all are the best! I rescheduled the SS apt for next Tuesday. They were real cool about it! I told them I could bring them a note but they said, no problem it's just good you called, lots don't! The dentist did give me antibiotics yesterday, 4 per day> I forget what they were but he said they are strong ones. My new dentists does do root canals and gave me the option of him doing it or going to a specialist. I said to him, I know nothing about them, what do you suggest? He said mine was really involved because he drilled out so much already and I should see the specialist. I thought that it was realy nice of him to be honest even though it cost him some biz! I will have the post & crown done by him though. I hope the other dentist is just as nice! People here in the country are much nicer than where I came from! It's funny that in Florida, you have to go north to get to the real south! S.E. Fla is mostly yankees and foreners but here families go back generations, I love living here!
My tooth is driving me crazy! I have the origels and some other stuff but it doesn't seem to get to where the pain goes>> into my jaw & head and my pain pills don't do squat for head pain! My neck is giving me fits too from tensing up my head and jaw I guess. Anyway, sorry I haven't been posting, it's kind of a chore sitting here when the pain levels are up, as many of you know! Hopefully I can get caught back up this weekend!!! If anyone is having a bad time, I'm really sorry I haven't replied!!! I just haven't been reading the posts at all! It makes me sad!!!!! I totally agree with Dani! I wish my dentist would have done the same. He should have.

Pete don't miss your SSD appt. Change the dentist one. I would advise you to try a little ground up Clove put it in a little piece of papertowel and put it back there on or near you tooth. It will numb it up for you just a bit until you get done at the SSD office and can get to the dentist.
