Has anyone had any dealings with Norspan patches

Hi I'm not new to this site only this forum. I've just started using Norspan patches (5) as directed by my rheumy for cronic pain due to AS.

Is there anything I should look out for?

Sorry, I don't use any patches..I tried the lidocaine patch about a year ago, but because of the heat here in Texas, it would make me very sick on days
when the weather was over 80 degree's f... maybe you could do a google search on the patch your using, I hope the patch can help you...please be patient others will come
by with better advise..only thing with patches that I know is they can be hard to stick on and stay in place...

many thanks for the replies guys, I've look on the site for the Norspan patches and got information from there, but there's nothing like first hand knowledge from users is there?

I applied it last night (first one) it says it takes 3 days to kick in?  Feeling o.k no side effects as yet, which is good.  Must say I was a little concerned about putting it on in case I felt 'out of it'.

Your right this web site is amazing and I'm a regular on RA site as I have AS and other medical problems, I immediately felt like I wasn't alone from signing on the first day (some time ago).

I'll be patient and see if anyone else comes up with anything.

I am fairly new also, you will really love this forum the people are so caring, get info and wonderful suppport, and you dont feel so alone.
I have just started Norspan Patches also, its been 2 weeks now.

I started on 10mg, and after leaving this on for one week, went back to my dr and explained that the pain was still severe and there was not change in my pain, so i have now placed a 20 mg patch on ..much much better, it has been so effective in reileving my neck pain and back pain and once i placed the 20 mg patch on within 3 days i could feel the pain relief, but unfortunaly it has not helped my severe shoulder pain, thats another story.

I have had no side effects except a slight metallic taste in my mouth, which is a little horrible at times.
A little more tored than usual, but not fuzzy or out of it, just have moments during the day when i just want to have a nap.
But i dont get much time to rest until after dinner and all the kids are in bed.

I am also taking Panadine Forte (codeine) and anti-inflamotorys, but even though i have a combo of meds my shoulder pain is not been relieved, its still so severe and very painful. I was under the assumption that the Norspan Patch would target all the pains i have.
I was under this assumption because Norspan is a opiad based strong pain med.

How are you going since your last post?

What are you taking the Norpsan for? what kind of pain do you experience and where , if you dont mind me asking.

Welli do hope they help you the way they have assisted me, i am very impreesed with the level of relief since increasing the dose to 20mg.
Please keep me posted on how you go .

Hi Peggy, I have no info on the patches, just thought I'd say hello on another site.

Is this for your foot pain? I really hope they give you some relief. I'm still chugging down panadeine forte but the prednisone has taken the edge off TG.

I'll cross my fingers it kicks in soon for you, golitho

Hi one and all,

Golitho - yes their for the pain in my ankle/foot.

I'm 5 days in on the patches and no difference to the pain at all, just added huge headaches!!!. Hospital this week for more tests and blood tests so will see what happens in coming weeks.  Whilst emailing this post just had phone call from staff member who has been given a bad outcome to breast cancer, so ending now as feeling very sad.

I think if the patches were going to be effective they would have given some level of pain relief by now.
Sorry to hear of your headaches, the only thing i have expreienced latley is a few hot and cold chills, other than that all is fine.
I think you need to consult with you Dr and maybe think about adjusting your dosage.
I started on 10mg, did not help, now 20 mg and pretty good pain relief in most areas of my body.

I am going to see if i can obtain an additional 5 mg Patch so 25 in total and im pretty sure i will recieve an effective combination, my fingers are crosses, apparently i have been advised the highest dose is 2x20 mg patch.

l was advised by my Dr not to go into saunas/hot tubs/spas etc...as the medications starts to release more Burenorphine per milligram than it should thus could make you feel more drowsy or sick. Well only a few weeks ago i did just that soak in a spa , as i did not have this info prior to doing so, but did not experience any of these symptoms thankfully.

Do you get an itchy arm where the patch is located?
It may take some time to get the dose right, but dont give up yet ! you still have a few options in dosages .
Let us know how you go, you are the only other person i have spoken with that is on this medication

So i am interested in how you go, its been 3 weeks for me and so far so good .

Hi punchfit,

Well it's been two weeks now and no relieve at all, only headaches and extreme hot flushes which I'm not coping with at all well.  I went through the 'change' at 34 when I had everything taken away and to be doing that again is a pain and that's an understatement.

I see my specialist on Monday so will see what he has to say. I must say that I can't up the dose if I'm going to suffer with these hot flushes and headaches, I'd rather put up with the pain I've had for the last two years..!Time will tell I suppose?

I'm not happy with the look of the patches either. They may be flesh coloured but mine have 'NORSPAN PATCHES 5MG' written right across them.  I have them on my back so you can't see them, but then I can't wear strappy things because you see all the writing over them and people ask what it's about!!

Are you having any other effects from them as your on a much bigger dose than I am?  I've not had hot baths or been out in the sun since having them on as I did know about that but only from going on the web page and reading huge amounts about it.  There was nothing in the box it came in, which personally I think it wrong as there are so many DO'S AND DON'TS........

How are the patches working out for you? has anyone on here had any more experience with any other pain relieving patches?
I see a lot of problems with the fentanyl patches, but I think if taken actually correctly they look very very promising. But these patches are 3 days versus the 7 days in the norspan (from site). I have had experience with the lidcaine patechs and I did not get much relief from them. The spot it was placed would only help that spot on a small degree, and the site would become red and itchy. Any other patch luck guys?

The patches I have you are only allowed to place on top of chest/back or top of arms. They don't go on the area where the pain is. Sorry I can't help you with any other treatment regarding patches

Hi every one,Im new here.
I have been on Norspan 5 for a year now for chronic back nerve pain,I have severe reaction to them but have to put up with it,I get bad rash.
My problem is about 3 days ago it stopped controlling my pain,could my body of got used to it or something,I am,thinking of swapping to the Durogesic pach
but I'm a bit worried about what will happen when I change.
I am booked in for surgery to have the disk removed in the next month or so, L5 S1 is where mine is,it causes unbearable pain from my butt all the way down my leg,its agony,like a permanent cramp.I hardly ever sit down as that makes it worse.I also take panadiene forte every few hours.The pain is so bad,mainly late in the day and first when I get up until the extra pain killers kick in,its hurts so much I end up crying in pain,especially the last few days.
Has anyone swapped from Norspan to Durogesic???????????

PS. I have severe hot flushes all the time and also I am sensitive to morphine it makes me sick,I often feel sick in the mornings from the Norspan and it itches so bad it drives me crazy.

I am not on the brand of patch that was prescribed for you but I was on Butran 10mg patch. They to have butran written on them.

I have severe leg pain due to a work related injury. The 10 mg butran patch wasnt working after wearing it for the prescribed week. I called the doc and he told me to take off the used patch and replace with 2 fresh ones. I wore those 2 for a week and still no relief I was going out of my mind. These patches you cant get in a spa or a hot bath or hot shower because it will release more medicine than it should and make you feel loopy and nauseated.

So this was chalked up to be another medicine for me that did not relieve in any way my pain in my leg.

Also if the adhesive doesnt stick enough for you never place duct tape over the patch. It must be a tape that breathes. Check with your local pharmacy on which tape would work best with that patch.

I really empathize with you for your quest of a medicine that would relieve your pain. Try to stay strong and we are here for you.

Keep us posted as to what happens when you see your doc on Monday. I would like to know what he prescribes next for you.
