I started off prescribed oxycontin for pain, it turned into an addiction. Today was my 5th day of withdrawal. I am tryiung to get off this crap without my family finding out because I lost my job and insurance and we dont have money to just throw out. I couldnt take it and tried taking a perc 15 to help curb some of the effects. It helped a little but I amd still suffering here. I am showing just about every sign of withdrawal besided seizures and that is why I am freaking out. I suffer from anxiety/ depression normally so right now its about a 10000 times worse than normal. I was taking about 80 - 120 mgs every other day or so of oxy I dont know how severe of a WD that can cause but it feels horrible. I have gotten about 2 hrs of sleep that i was only able to get by drinking. I KNOW THATS SO DUMB!!! but please I just dont know what to do. I am soo scared.... please if anyone has any advice please let me know. I am just so scared to have a siezure or something that serious. ANY HELP ANYONE COULD GIVE ME, I WOULD BE ETERNALLY GREATFUL

Hi Scared...

First of all... any and all of us here do have understanding and compassion for the situation you are in. It can happen to any of us. BUT, please ask a doctor for help!! They can give you suboxone which will get you off of the narcotic without the awful withdrawal. It's very dangerous to your health to do this alone. Go to an emergency room and they will help you also. I know this isn't what you want to do or hear but it's the only safe way to get off the drugs.

It's hard to ask for help...but you must for you and your loved ones. And check back in so we can keep in touch...OK?

Thank you... Im basically just tryin to muster up the courage to talk to someone right now... Thank you so much. Just thinking about telling my mother this is goin to break her heart ..... I dont want to hurt her and I know this is going to. I would have rather dealt with every single day of pain from my accident than do this. Thank you so much for your support. I have felt completely alone in the world for the past few days and your the first person to respond :^(

Thank You for your kindness and understanding, I dont know how I let this happen, but I'm sick of trying to escape. I have to face this crap and stay away from this junk for the rest of my life.

Hi Imscared,
I haven't posted here, but I read your post and so my first post is to you to say hang in there and get some help. Getting off different pain killers is difficult and you'll need support.
It will break more hearts if you don't let them know what's going on. It's risky, but worth it so much more often than not in my experience. Get a doctor's help.

You said that this is day 5 of your withdrawal correct? If it is, then first, don't add fuel to the fire by taking any more percocet/oxycodone products. Doing that might relieve some of the symptoms but will not help you in the long term. If you are at day 5, you are most of the way through the bad part and should start feeling a little better as each day passes. The key for you right now is NOT to take anything that is going to set you right back at the beginning. If you were going to have a seizure , you would have had it by now.
Suboxone at this point would be pointless. Suboxone would have been one alternative in the beginning but now that you are most of the way through this withdrawal, adding it now would be a bit pointless. And expensive. Most doctors who use suboxone don't accept insurance and the meds must be paid for and they are expensive.
Some over the counter anti diarreheals will help if you are still suffering some of the stomach upset and diarreheals that come with withdrawal and making sure to eat something, even if it is a light meal will go a long way in helping you feel a bit better. Hot soaks in the tub help relax the aching muscles and muscle spasms if you are having trouble.
You are almost through it and at this point, as long as you don't take anymore percocet to ease the symptoms, you are almost at the end and should start feeling better as more time passes.

I agree with the others, please seek help from your doctor. You don't have to do this alone. Your doctor can give you medication to help with the withdrawal symptoms & if necessary refer you to a detox program or a special doctor called an addictionologist, who works with recovering addicts. It can be very dangerous to try to withdraw on your own, so please call doctor, go see a doctor, just get some medical help! Best of luck to you.

You are not alone we are all with you on this. I take oxycodone elixor and every once and awhile think I'm addicted to it and I may be but I can go all day without a dose and feel just fine other than the pain that I experience from not taking it. I hope things go well for you and heading to the doctor so you have some back up would probably help. As a mom of two girls I wouldn't want them to feel alone and would not judge them if I was told by them that they had a problem. Trust your mom and family with this information I doubt they will be harder on you than you are on yourself. Take care cause I care!!!

    Hello Scarred! Welcome to the CP forum! You have gotten some really good advice here, so I won't add to the mix of what has been brought up here. I'm glad to see that you have realized the terrible situation you are in, and sought help. Once you get out of this predicament, I hope you follow through, and stay on the straight path. As you can see, thses pain meds will destroy your life and those around you as well, if not taken with care, and per a Dr's orders. Things may look pretty dark right now, but things will get better once you are honest with yourself and your family. Take care my friend, and come back and let us know the outcome of your journey went.

Sorry about your withdrawals, but if your at 5 days, then you should be over the worst of it. If you where addicted to these pain meds, then you really need to seek out treatment, which doesnt always mean inpatient. Their's intensive OUTpatient treatment which usually is a group that get together 3 hours a day, 3 days a week with an addiction councelour. Also 12 step programs can be helpful, unless your not into that higher power thing, their's always SMART groups, they even have SMART groups online. Also if you relapse or feel like you cant stay away from pain meds, then maybe going to a methadone clinic or seeing a doctor who does prescribe Suboxone could help at that point, but I wouldnt jump into those without trying other things first as they take alot of commitment and money.

But no matter what, the chances of staying clean after going cold turkey with no perfessional help will make our chances of staying clean very very slim. Addiction is a disease and it needs treatment jus like any other medical problem would. Also lotsof doctors are very great at getitng you started on pain meds but when it comes to wanting to get off, they dont know anything and their help isnt worth squat. Their are meds out their to help with withdrawal that are not methadone or Suboxone/Subutex, like there is Clonidine which is a blood pressure med that is supose to help alot with wtihdrawals, and sometimes a benzo like valium or ativan can help short term with the anxiety, or if you cant do benzos then maybe visteril would help with the anxiety. Also I hear their's certain vitamins that can help with the withdrawal pain, but I cant remember those, but I'm sure you can google it. But lots of hot baths and a heating pad can help.

And you need to tell people, you'd be surprised at how much support you just might get. keeping it a secret will just make you more depressed and can lead to relapsing. Just dont forget about getting perfessional help, it's the key to everything.

Hi sacred this is try # 3 my posts get lost I,m totally new to the web so don't think I,m slow blame it on meds! I,m an Rn for 18yrs had bilat knee replacments in 2004 and ended up with nero pain cond. RSD .there's a lot of other stuff but I don"t know how to get it on here like the vets , maybe one day someone can help me with tht . !ST honey don"t do this alone ,I understand the money issue I,m sure a lot of us here are on disability or can only work a little in your case you have a willing spirit and great strenth so I believe you can do it .but don't do it alone, sombody should know so if you have a prob. They can get you help ,but I think a md. Visit and a script can help a lot and be less dangerous,for you ,if you need an ear this is a great site everybody , understands. Anytime. I also want to welcome you to the Chronic Pain forum of Healing Well. Although a lot of people have given you ideas, I think the only one to follow is to get competent medical help, and hopefully find the courage to talk with your family to get their support. If you're using alcohol and other medications that may just keep your addiction active (and there's a difference between dependence and addiction - but it sounds like you MAY be dealing with addiction if you can't stay away from some of these substances).

There are treatment programs, and in most areas you can find some that may not require insurance. Even looking in your yellow pages should give you some idea of local addiction programs that can help with detox and getting you set up with an overall strategy for dealing with this.

But you don't want to keep taking various medications, alcohol or whatever to take the edge off the withdrawl symptoms. I have a hunch you know that can be dangerous. Please, get some professional help, and we can be here to support you.

Imscared....I know how hyou feel.  I have been through this before and it's not easy...you have gone through the worst of it if you are actually on day 5, but I have a question....Why are you going through the WD in the first place?  What was the reason you were taking pain meds and why are you not taking them anymore?

 

I have been away from the forum for a while so if I missed something I apologize...but if you need to be on pain meds for a medical reason then stopping them cold turkey isn't the way to go.
