I know this might sound a little corny or silly and it is not about pain. But I would like to share an experience that I had this evening, that for me was a bit up-lifting! I have bird feeders in my back yard and right next to my porch that I made last summer, I put a big Iron hook and have hung on it a sack of thistle seed for the Golden Finches and the Indigo Buntings, and lately I have had plenty of them there! Anyway this evening while on the computer I heard a very loud thump, it sounded like something had hit the window of the french doors that go to the porch! Sure enough there was a Golden Finch laying on the porch, at first it was sitting up then it went down on its head and laid there motionless. Well I slipped on a pair of rubber gloves, and went out and pick it up, it's eyes were closed but it was still breathing, I held it cupped in my hands and gently stroked its head and breast, and after a short while it opened its eyes. It still just layed there in my hands, after a little while it shook its head and sat up in my hand, I was still lightly stroking it and talking to it. The bird started actually throwing up in my hand and also doing the other end, and I thought maybe this was the end for him. But he sat in my hand for a good 15 or 20 minutes, just looking at me as I talked to him. By then my hands were wide open and he could fly away anytime he wanted. It was funny because as I talked to him I finally said " you know little fellow if you are alright now you can fly away any time you want." Right then he did! He flew out of my hands and into a near by tree and then he flew away. It made me feel good! I mean really Good!

I just wanted to share this with you!

I am a bird lover to W.B. and I think you made a connection today! I swear my parots can read my mind and I think your little friend knew what you were thinking cause I don't think he/she understood English!
My humming birds are back and I have been sitting outside watching them on their feeder this past couple weeks. They just blow my mind! I have become such a bird watcher since moving to the country, I mean I always loved to watch them. There is a feather thing I have ever since I started tying fishing flys using feathers and collecting so many different kinds, I've watched birds or actually their feathers! After collecting feathers for over 40 years, I don't envy thier feathers anymore, well sometimes but I just love watching the little fellows (males are almost always prettier!)
I could talk more about them but this is your thread W.B. Thanks for sharing!! I don't want them to get hurt but I would just love for something like that to happen to me!!!

What a touching story! Thank you for sharing. I've had a really rotten day today & your story made me smile. I'd like to think that the bird understood your love, kindness, and warmth. They are quite intelligent, amazing creatures.

Aw WB that is such an uplifting story and thank you for sharing it with us. We need to hear about things like this, it gives us something else to think about. And to think the little guy, just sat there knowing he could fly any time but he was comforted by you holding him and talking to him. I too, love the birds, I like going out at daylight and listening to the birds wake up, it is calming to me to hear them sing in the mornings. My neighbor 2 doors down has a woodpecker in her back yard. This guy comes back every year and there is also one across the street, boy they get to going to town on those trees. I have my husbands binoculars that I try to catch a glimpse of the woodpeckers, so far I have not got to see them.

This year a robin made her nest over the hot tub cover and the brittany spaniell & golden retreiver have about wore me and the momma bird out. I do not know if the baby fell out or was pushed but the brittany got him. The momma & daddy bird has been swooping him for weeks, I wish they wouldf have pecked that little pointed head of his. I was so upset, I go thru this every stinking year. Yes, I know he is a bird dog and we go thru this every year so next year my mind is made up not to allow any nests in the backyard. Too upsetting for me. Thanks again for sharing.

I don't want to take over your thread, but I do want to share something with you: This reminds me of my own little bird story from last week. Last Tuesday morning around 5:30 am, I was woken up by a bird singing very loudly. In fact it was so loud, that it sounded like the bird was in my dorm room! I pulled back my curtains to see a small finch sitting on my open window singing away. After about an hour of singing, the bird stopped & I fell back asleep. An hour later, when I got up, I pulled back my curtains to find this perfect tiny little bird's nest in the joint of my open window! Unfortunately, I had to destroy the nest, because it was not in a good place, since it prevented me from closing the window (and I get fined if I leave my windows open at the end of the semester & didn't want anything to happen to the baby birds if someone tried to force the window closed after I left).

I felt horrible having to remove the nest, but I figured the bird would find a new nesting spot.

Well, the next morning, guess who was back trying to rebuild his nest?! This time he brought his girlfriend along too! Fortunately, I closed my windows before he could build anything substantial. But the bird didn't give up! He came back the next morning too!

In a way it made me feel very special. It was very heartwarming. For some reason, this beautiful little bird kept coming back to me! I wish I could have let him build his nest there & watched the babies grow up. I was tempted to leave my window open while I was gone over the weekend & see what happened, but I didn't. I haven't been back to campus since this incident, so I don't know if he is still around. I'm kind of curious to see what happens on Wednesday morning!

p.s. I have a bird story from the past couple of weeks, too, but unfortunately it ended more like Straydog's did. Had a mother robin build a nest on my deck - wedged in between a pipe and the corner of the house, and have been watching as she laid one egg for each of 3 days. I even took pictures each day with my cell phone - standing on my tip toes, which she wasn't sitting on the nest, and each day I have one more egg! Beautiful robin's egg blue! And she's been sitting on the nest until Friday night when the storms and cold started. Yesterday I took some pictures of the inside of the nest, because I feared the nest had been abandoned (it's been down around freezing here for 3 nights in a row!) and I couldn't see the eggs. They might be buried in the straw, but it's been 3 days since the mother's been around at all. I was hoping to follow the babies, but I'm sure it's been way too cold for the eggs to have survived. sad So I'm glad to hear your story, WB. And Skeye, my guess is it would be too cold where you are some of these nights, too, so probably best you made them postpone their nest building!

Thank You for sharing your story! You Guys your not taking over my thread, by sharing your own happy experience! We are family here and we need to sometimes share the warm special things that happen to us too! And I am sure that we all have them, skeye, straydog, pete, PALady and everyone else, share with me, share with everyone here! All these nice little special things that happen to us, that brighten up our lives! I need it, you need it, we all need to have and share these things!



I set my camera on a tripod by the window and take pictures of all the different bird, just in an hour I had, Golden Finches, and Purple Finches, Indego Buntings, and Rose Breasted Grosebeak, and Rufous-sided Towhee, and of course the Cardinals and the Blue Jays and Mourning Doves, and all the rest of the regular birds that come and dine at my feeder! I could watch them for hours!



But this evening was special, this little gold finch he was all bright yellow with deep black markings, and he was so small and fragile in my hand, I honestly thought he was going to die in my hand. What a gift they are, their so beautiful, but they are fragile little birds, it just touched me to see the way he kept looking at me and cocking his head, but not quite ready to leave and fly away.



Anyway don't be afraid to post and share your stories here too, we all need the sharing!

Hi Whitebeard-that is so neat-kinda reminds me of Andy Griffith's show. The episode where Opie accidentally killed a mother bird and he took care of the baby birds until they were ready to fly! I am so glad you shared with us! I was feeling a little down but now I feel pretty darn good. Thanks, Donna idea eyes

White Beard, thank you for sharing that. It gives me hope that as long as we each have someone supporting us, we too can get up and fly away to better things one day.

Hey White Beard , Thats a very cool story , making a connection with nature like that is a rare pleasure , we put sugar water out to attract humming birds and have a section of the garden dedicated to attracting butterflies , all the plants they like to feed on .This is at my sisters in New Jersey , we haven't been as lucky as you yet though , what a wonderful expierence !! You are an amazing artist and you've been hiding it all of this time?!! Besides the cool birds I love the pictures of some of your artwork.

Great story and I'm so glad to have something enjoyable to read. We need to talk about the pain and vent but we can lose who we are in the process if we aren't careful.

Hey Whitebeard!!  I saw your pictures!  We get goldfinches here too!!  We hang the sack full of the niger and they just come out of the wood work!!!  My hubby calls them mice with wings because of they way they crawl all over the sack including going upside down!!  We also have the rufous sided towhees as well!!  I just love those!  The little brown guy is called a house sparrow.  I have a story about one of those!

A long time ago I owned a mustang.  I was driving home and out of the corner of my eye I saw a small bird fly and swoop right in front of my car.  I wasn't sure if I hit it; I didn't hear anything.  I know...duh..small bird, big car.  I drove the two more miles home.  When I got out, I checked the front of my car.  Wedged way deep in my grill was this sparrow.  Its wings were all splayed out.  I just knew I had killed it.  I was looked at it and was grimacing and wondering how to get it out when I saw it breathing.  I reaching in and sorta untangled it.  I was holding and gently unfolding each wing and leg to see what was damaged.  Shockingly the little guy looked intact!  I held him very gently just like you did with your feathered friend and off he flew!!  My heart soared with him!!  I was so glad to see him fly.  I have always wondered what the little guy thought about all of that!!  "a huge, black, fast-moving monster hits me hard.  A really frightening monster frees me from the black monster and inspects me.  This second monster let me go........it took me a while to figure out where the heck I was!!  What a day!"

I have to say that not only is the story touching, but your pictures are beautiful! I'm one who doesn't recognize the types of birds except the more obvious like robins and cardinals and bluejays, but they are so sweet. I'm hoping I get another robin family in my yard once the weather warms up. I usually have one family every year, and love to watch the babies running around chirping at the parents' heels "feed me, feed me!". Although I also think the parents must be exhausted! LOL

Becky and Under and all the rest of you, I do Thank YOU ALL for such nice, warm, heart touching comments! I real mean this, when I say I appreciate each and every one of you!  Right after this incident happened, I was just..... well.... I guess Gretchen said it best, my heart just soar away with this little feathered fellow!  I just had to share it, to tell some one, and as I said your my family, and that is who you share things with isn't?

 

PALady I do hope you get those Robins back in your yard again. I do have a quick story about Robins, and I swear this is a true story as I watched it happen with my own two eyes! It was two years ago, there were two Robins in my back yard on the grass, and they were mating, and while they were doing it, a Hawk swooped down  and grabbed them both and flew away with them! I just could not believe it! It was sad but in away kind of funny the way it happened!

 

Gretchen  I bet that experienced warmed your heart!  Just hearing about it means allot!  You know I do like animals of all types! Anyway I look forward to seeing your drawings. Yes I bet we would be friends very quickly!  It would nice if allot us here on the forum all lived close together can you imagine ???? What fun that would be!!

WhiteBeard you have been keeping a very good secret, had no clue you are also an artist. You truly are a very gifted person which many of us have said before because of your nursing career and how special people work in the dept of nursing that you did. Wow, and you are pretty darn good phtographer too, lol, , lets see a sculptor too, boy am I ever impressed. I hope that you have no more little wounded feathered friends but if you do I hope they find their way to your house. Perhaps it was all of the feeders hanging around that assured the little guy that you are a nice man that would take care of him.
