Getting ready to leave to make the hour drive to the neurosurgeon.  Really glad it was moved up, but really nervous.  I hope I like the guy.  They told my that he was going to do an evaluation, decide which surgery needed done first and schedule it.  Sounds like I may be having surgery in the next few weeks.  A little scary, but necessary.  Keep your fingers crossed and I will let you all know what they decide.  Maybe you can give me some insight as to what to expect!

I'm thinking of you and I hope all goes well. Maybe you'll finally get all the info you need sorted out and a clear expectation of what's next - the surgery, the recuperation time....etc.

Well, Surgery on the 14th of July...2 level discectomy. Even tho there is LOTS of degeneration and protrusion, the main problem tho is the spinal cord impingement at c5 and c6. Scheduled for thorasic MRI in weeks because of my legs. He said he could not guarantee that this will fix my legs but it should. surgery is imperative because the spinal cord is so impenged that it will eventually be completly "shut off" and then it will be damaged enough that I will probably loose the use of my legs. And most shocking, this is now considered outpatient surgery!!

We are hoping it helps...I just pray that my spinal cord isn't permanently injured. If it is, this my only help with my neck pain, not the numbness in my legs. That is why he ordered the MRI of my thorasic spine. He wants to see if there is any impingement there. He said that my neck can't wait, he's hoping to stop any damage thet is being done now. Basically it is have the surgery, keep our fingers crossed and hope that my spinal cord is only pinched and not damaged.....don't want to stay where I am with my legs only working part time. He said that after he sees a new thorasic MRI that he will decide if we need to do more surgery...but the neck has to come first. 4 weeks away. Keeping my fingers crossed and my activity at a minimum to try to [prevent more squishing on the spinal cord!

Is he doing a fusion with the diskectomy? You say that this is an out patient surgery? Just don't be surprised if they don't keep you a day or two, I had my surgery on a early monday morning and I was suppose to go home the next day, but I ended up having to stay till Wednesday, I had a diskectomy at C5/6 and fusion Anterior Cervical Diskectomy and Fusion ACDF. It really can make a difference! It did for me! I had seen the surgeon this past Wednesday for a possibe C3/4 ACDF he says thier is a problem their but he thinks my pain is coming from C-1-2 area, and he wants more tests done first before he does surgery, my Pain Doctor is not in agreement with him and wants me to see another surgeon. We shall see! Anyway I know what you are going through finallyreallycrazy, hang in there and be especially careful during this time before you have your surgery!

Yes, he is doing the fusion with the discectomy. He said that normally he sends patients home that same afternoon, but I requested to be kept at least overnight, because we live over an hour away, and I would just feel better about it if I stayed at least one night. Part of my pre-op is a Thorasic spine MRI so he can look at that, because he is a little baffled at the whole legs not working thing. He said it is very likely that it is my neck, but he is puzzled that I don't have more problems with my upper extremities. He wants to see if there is something in the Thorasic that they missed before. He said the osteoporosis is due to not taking hormone replacement therapy after my hysterectomy at 27, but both of my grandmothers and one aunt has had breast cancer, and mastectomies. If I am remembering right, hormone replacement increases your chance of breast cancer, and I don't need any more of a chance than I already have. It is one of those catch 22's! Osteoporosis or increased chance of breast cancer (after I have already had uterine and ovarian cancer!) What to do???
