i went in my Walgreens this morning about 8:30 and dropped my Rxs. and by 8:45 they had been robbed of all the OxyContin they had. WOW

Sadly , this kind of robbery is becoming all too often.There was a report today on CNN that outlined how many pharmacies are not selling Oxycontin or other narcotics because of the threat to their employee's from armed robberies.

Yep, it happens way too many times and this is one of the reasons we have trouble getting pain medications. IMHO, the biggest culprit is the media. Any time the word 'oxycontin' comes up, especially if it's related to a famous name, they go hog wild repeating the same old stories of how dangerous it is to take and on and on. The thugs, druggies and goofballs (nicest word I could think of) have really screwed things up for many of us who live with chronic pain.

A few years ago the small-town pharmacy I go to was robbed at gunpoint. The owner was way smarter than the robber...lol how can someone who's robbing a drugstore for a fix be called smart?...lol.. and in broad daylight about 4 in the afternoon this guy walks in with some sort of mask on. He asks for the all of the oxycontin within 60 seconds and says he has a gun strapped to his leg. (how would he get to that gun fast enough to do anything...lol??) The owner/pharmacist was smart and handed it to him. His first concern were all of the people in the store and not putting them in jeopardy. Those were his friends and neighbors and no way was he going to let them get hurt. He was caught 2 hours later and was also a suspect on an earlier pharmacy robbery.

Personally, I took oxycontin for many years. Since our insurance upped our copay yet another time I finally said...Enough! I asked Doc to switch me to MS Contin, which I had to use once before, and it's a lot easier mentally to get my prescription filled. Even the sweetest gal at the pharmacy who I've known for years made a nasty comment to me one day about me taking the oxy! Like I'm the one prescribing it???

We fight on all fronts just to get the medications we need so we can have some sort of quality to our lives. The best way to continue the fight is to stick together and keep educating the rest of the world that we're all not taking it for the 'feel'. Those of us with chronic pain take it to survive.

It's a scary thing. I have a Pharmacist friend who owns his own store. He's been robbed 3 times in 2 months, by the same guy...looking for Oxycontin. I think the guy has finally been caught, but yeah...it's a problem here as well (I'm in Calgary, Alberta).

My pharmacy is at our Safeway store. They have a sign that states they only keep a tiny supply of Oxycontin on site, and each day, they receive just enough to fill the prescriptions they've entered the day before. Some stores are putting in extra guard bars in front of their store windows, and "locking" up the pharmacy so robbers can't get in to the actual pharmacy/drug area.

This is terrible, I always give my Rx to pharmacy and tell them I will be back in a couple of days that way they don't need to explain to me about not having enough as I am always concerned about who is listening.

This is just crazy, but I have to say, it happens here to in the Buffalo area. I'm glad it wasn't this bad when I was taking oxycontin. We were living in Washington state when I was taking it, and it wasn't as bad as it is now.

It really is scary.

Chutz, I agree with you completely, what makes people think they can treat someone like that?  Again and again I say, I wish no harm to anyone, but walk in my shoes for one hour of one day.  I can just about say that 99.9% of people out here that look at us with such distane, disgust and all the other  dis's would not be so quick to judge.

There will always be persons out there who are not getting or taking these narcotic meds per instruction.  But you hit it on the head with the media, unfortunately its not just meds these uses and whatever that are over reported, it life in general.

Being I am aged like a fine wine, I sometimes watch black and white movies, you know the ones made in the late 1930's and thru the 50's etc.  It is amazing to see the very same things that happen in 2011, surprise, surprise its in a movie I am watching made in 1946 and on and on.  The same issues have been around since the beginning of time itself,  are on many of those movies.  The difference, is the news is reported at every minute of every day 24/7.

Ok I know it is time for me to go to sleep, I am rambling on to the point that I cant remember what the post was originally about. lol, I am turning in, tender hugs to all, and low pain days now and.......................................as much as possible.

Ah, that is why they put up or are putting up bullet=proof or shatter-proof glass at the pharms now, just like your bank. Cameras alone aren't doing enough anymore. The economy stinks, lots of people are still out of a job and well it not really all that shocking to hear about an uptick in robberies and thefts, be it motor vehicles or pharms.

This is indeed a sorry state...and we with the CP and taking our meds properly get hurt the most...
These theives need to do hard time and not get off with a slap on the wrist...so many of these get released
way to easy and are out on the streets to do this again...
