How much was your surgery?

Just wondering if anyone knows what the hospital charged your insurance company for surgery?

Since this was my first hospital stay.... I had no idea what the cost would be.... just found out .... $128,641.47...

I know the hospital gets only what insurance company gives them.... I am out of pocket $1,200.00 so far.....

Talk about sticker shock.

10 years ago my wife had to have her gallbladder removed. Surgeon: $10,000, hospital:$28,000, and that was for an out-patient procedure.

5 years ago for me: 3 weeks ICU, life flight from county hospital to regional, 2 surgeries, a team of doctors that included a surgeon, infectious disease specialist, pulmonoligist, cardiologist, a resident and an intern cost $498,000 and change. This did not include the bill for the week I spent at the county hospital before being transferred.

Fortunately we had very good insurance back then (during that 1/2 million dollar stay) and the picked up 100% and waved the deductible and co-pays both for that illness and for the rest of the year. The hospital I was in was ready to step in too and forgive any and everything the insurance might not pay as well as make sure the life flight bill was covered if need be.

I hope your out of pocket expenses end at 1200...I can only imagine the stress that is added to an already challenging issue.

Here, it can be difficult to get surgery and the wait times are long but thankfully it is covered. I am one of the lucky ones who is considered an ideal candidate for my surgery so I am now in the waiting line...lol

 

 

   ....I believe my double lumbar fusion surgery was around $84,000 plus or minus a few thousand. When I had my heart attack in 2002....that was a heafty bill as well. Lucky me,...there was no expense for me....have very good Ins.

WOW.... those are some hefty price tags!

My total didn't include X-rays, MRI, CT and the Dr consults... guess that would add another couple of thousand $$$$'s

My Bone Growth Stimulator was $5,000.00... crazy right?!?!

If people knew or really thought about how much sub contracting that goes on with hospitals it would drive them crazy.

For years after the two main communities in the county decided to close the city hospitals in favor of one large county one the new one sub contracted virtually everything. The bill you got from the hospital would only be for the use of the physical aspects of the facility...ie the machines, OR rooms, patient rooms, etc. You would get separate bills for lab work, the "hospital" doctors who treated you or read you X-rays and such. You would even get a separate bill for any medicines you received while a patient from the "hospital" pharmacy. They had literally sub contracted out almost everything except nurses.

Fortunately this has finally, mostly stopped at the county hospital. Now when you are treated there the only extra bills you will get would be from your own doctor assuming they were not directly employed by the hospital.

I have to wonder how many hospitals still sub contract out services, and how that is adding to the skyrocketing costs of health care. When you think about this kind of thing it is no wonder insurance companies have armies of processors to wade through everything.

One of the first things I asked when I was approached with have neuro-stim installation was the cost.  That was the one question that was never answered.

Unfortunately I have to take responsibility for that one because I should have kept on asking until I found out, If I had know the cost, I never would have had it done.

I re member when I first heard of the neuro-stim, it was years ago, an article that Jerry Lewis (the actor) had written, he wrote how long he had suffered with lower back problems, and how this wonderful neuro-stim had saved his life.  At that time it was somewhere in the area of 200,000.-300,000.  Of course it was way out of my league.

When I found out what it cost me, after it was done of course, I realized I would die before this bill would ever be paid, by that I mean old, old, old age would get me before this bill was paid.  Worse the darn thing has never worked.

But thats all for that, its been gone over to many times.

Something has to be done about the health care in this country(USA).  I am not sure what, but greed is going to put us all in the poorhouse.

And on this happy note I will say goodbye,  hope all are doing well and take care of yourselfs.  If possible stay out of hospitals, lol, I know its not possible but if we dont laugh we will cry.

My last surgery was about 2 yrs ago. It was laproscopic and I spent the night in the hospital. The hospital billed the insurance company almost $50,000 and the insurance company paid them less than $3000. That was it.

I am always amazed by how little the insurance company pays. If we all had to pay this little, we wouldn't need insurance.
