Woke up Drenched! Medication related?

      Last night I woke up around 1:00am and found myself drenched from head to toe! I had sweated so bad that my bed was drenched as well. shocked   My hair looked like I had just taken a shower.

      Have any of you suffered from this, and if so what was the cause for you? Could it be med related?

      I'm very strict on my medication schedual. However,... I tend to sleep through it once in a while, as I did last night, by about three hours.

   The only other time I had this happen was while I was recovering from my lumbar fusion surgery, and happened on the first night after surgery. They had to change my sheets and clothing...everything!

 Eagle , sorry you had such a bad sleep,your one of my fav people on here,as for the night sweats ,did you also have a bad dream or was it a hot day ?I know some meds I have been on in the past have caused that promblem,for me.Although that seems not to be the case for you.Ido hope you have a pleasent sleep tonight and its just a one time thing ,take care from michele

SE, I am not absolutley sure, but if you missed your meds by at least 3 hours, sometimes withdrawal comes quite quickly, and since I get the feeling you have never exprerianced withdrawal, this could be one  thing it may be.  If it continues then I would go to the doctor and have it checked out.

Funny thing about narc. meds, when taken over years of time, when there is no abuse at all in the taking of them, which I am sure in your case is true.  The body still needs what it needs.  Maybe you could set an alarm to take them during the night, but as a fellow insomniac, thats not really ideal.

See what happens, if you continue to wake up sweating like that, see your doctor.

As a person who has experienced withdrawal, I know that to be one of many awful things that go on when experiencing that.

Sorry, but I forgot, if you have increased your meds in the last month or so, that could also be it.

But being i am not a doctor, its best if it continues to ask your doc.

Hi Eagle, I don't have any answers, but I just wanted to drop in and say that I occasionally wake up sopping wet from sweat, too. It seems to occur randomly and I never figured out why...but I thought it was from having a nightmare. Other times, I thought maybe it was a hormonal thing. My general feeling is that I associate the night sweats with a nightmare or very distressing dream.

But then again, perhaps it is med related....I never thought of that. I do hope you get a better night's sleep tonight.

SE more than likely it is a result of your medication. I know recently you did get an increase and your body has probably become use to the increase by now.

If this problem persists get your hormone levels checked.

I have Dilaudid in my pump and one of the side effects of it is sweats. It does not matter if its 30 degrees outside, I still walk around with a wet head and water pouring off of me. It is embarrassing too, however, because I do not tolerate medications well at all, I will put up with this problem because its one of the few drugs with the least side effects and it does work well with pain in pumps.

I also drench the bed because that is one of the lovely spin offs with crohns disease.Sometimes we can't win for losing it seems like.

Hi Michael I've had this happen when I was gouing thru withdrawls from fentanyl those times. I have also had it happen other times as well. It could be hormone related since you are at the age that your hormones could be dropping. You might want to make an appointment with your doctor to get your hormones checked out if it keeps happening. I hope you can have a good night's sleep tonight and not have wet clothes and bed.

Hope you sleep well (and dry) tonight. I have had those kind of nights a few times and they were medication related. Usually forgetting to take on time and once by mixing up however they were my insulin.

Hey gang!…great responses! It's appreciated, and I see this is a problem with many of you! I was pretty shocked when it happened, and I have missed my med's several times because of sleeping early, so that makes me wonder if it might be something else. If it continues, I will simply visit my PCD, and see what he thinks.

Sore42long, my wife and I sleep in the basement, where it is actually quite cool. I do dream, but not to the point that Im stressed into a state that would make me sweat that much. Good question though!wink NiNi53, you are correct, in that I have never suffered what I consider a full blown withdrawal. I have experienced some of the mild symptoms, but not to the point that I have heard many of you talk about. It is a fear of mine, and I hope I never experience it.

Stray, if you are sweating that much, then yes, I can see where it would be pretty embarrassing to say the least.shocked Mysti, I suppose it could be dream induced, but I sure don't recall it, but again good point, and a possibility. Grandma, I too hope it is a dry night, and I was a little fearful of going to bed tonight, not really knowing what caused it in the first place.

All I know is that it was a very odd thing to experience, and I have sweat before, but not to the point that it looked like I had taken a shower, and had wet the bed all over.

Hey Mikey, That happens to me every night! Have to wash the sheets daily. I have never figured out why or has any of my Dr's but as you know, my hormones have run a muck! W/o a thyroid gland, I've never been able to get the meds dialed in to where I feel normal again after having it sliced out although my blood tests say I am. Also taking testosterone shots every three weeks has my manhood on a roller coaster ride which probably has something to do w/ it!!

Maybe get both your thyroid and testosterone levels checked??? Long term narcotic use can cause your boys to stop producing testosterone> I'm just sayin! Someone asked about that here last week and I answered him but never did see a reply after mine?

Good luck Bro, I hope it's just a one time thing for you cause waking up every hour soaking like that is not on my all time favorite things to do for the rest of my life!!!

        Morning Pete! I had the testosterone check out a while back and it was normal at that time. Not sure when my next appointment is, but if it keeps happening I will see about getting checked again. So far it seems to be a one time fluke, but given that only one night free from the sweats doesn't mean that I'm free and clear from it either.

        I didn't realize that so many people here have had this happen to them. I suppose with age comming on, there will be other surprises coming down the Pike! shakehead

      It's 107 degrease here today, and should be around 90 in your area...regardless it's way too hot! confused   Just 30 more days or so, and we all should be seeing some cooler weather. I'm ready for it!

    Take care, and I hope you get some fishing in, cause the fishing stories are running a little thin around here!

       Wanted to say I watched some of the Roseanna is Nutz show on TV, and she suffers from the sleep apnea as you do, and was wearing one of the sleeping mask. Her results from the sleep study was off the charts! How are you sleeping now?

Hi Michael,

I too have a problem with sweating excessively. I've checked with all of my Dr's and had several tests run. Some say possible blood sugar fluctuations, some say medication reactions, some say may blood pressure swings, some say hormones....basically nobody knows. I honestly think it may be a combination of some or all of these things. It's very frustrating when it happens and I am away from home.

With temp that hot ,lucky you and wife sleep in the cool basement !In canada we are lucky if we see 80 ,this has been a very cold summer ,infact only used the fan 2days this year? Glad you had a better sleep !Yes I want to see that Roseanne is nuts show.Iam happy it seems she found happiness and contentment,she deserves it. takecare

I have a questiom for you about the night sweats, do you snore? do you ever wake up in the night with a racing heart, do you every wake up kind of gasping for air, also do you get up frequently during the night to go to the bathroom?  I ask this because waking up drenched from sweat like that, can be a symptom of sleep apnea, allot of times if your having an apnea your O2 saturation may go down really low and your body reacts to it and severe nights sweats is a symptom.  It just might be that you had one of those nights

 

. It sounds like Pete definitely has a problem with that, as we had talked about that at length in a thread before. Anyway, I definitely can empathize with you, I know before I was diagnosed with complex sleep apnea I would have those bed drenching night sweats from head to toe two or three times a night. When I had my articular joint fusion done at C-3/4 last November, and I could not use my PAP machine because of the incision in the back of my neck, those night sweats immediately came back and one night in the hospital they had to come in  and change my sheet three times. Boy was I glad when I could get back to using my PAP machine! Anyway just a thought, stress could also be a cause, but if it continues I would definitely get to your Doctor and have it checked out.

 

 I know I was having those drenching night sweats  for years, and my PCP ran every test in the book on me,  he even thought I might have Lymphoma but nothing checked out!  It wasn't till I got diagnosed with sleep apnea and finally got put on the  proper treatmen, ( ASV machine) that I finally got relief, and within two weeks of starting the PAP my night sweats completely disappeared! as well as the nocturia.

Hey W/B, long time! I guess I haven't told you but I can't think of why I didn't!> I was diognosed w/ sever sleep apnea last Feb! In fact the doc said it was one of the worst cases he had seen in a long time! I've been wearing a full mask since then. I can't say that it has given me the relief or solved a lot of the problems I've hoped it would. I've had lots of problems wearing the mask and am still getting up every hour to pee which really makes it a pain!! I'm still sweating and waking drenched so I don't think that S/A has been causing that for me either. Sorry if it sounds like I'm whining, I guess I am though.

Other than that, all the same pains & problems I had back when I was posting alot> I still have, some worse some the same but I try every day not to let them get me down!!! Life is what you make of it evan w/ C.P. but you already know that!

S/E, sorry to hear it's so dad gone hot out there! Just to let you know> when it says 90 on the weather map here, thats in Tampa. We are always 7 or 8 degrees hotter than Tampa w/ the same humidity which means> 90 in Tampa> 98 in Floral City> add humidity and the heat index is 110~115 degrees!! So I sweat all day (outside) and all night (inside) I'm a wetman! A Fish! A salty dog! Hey> I'm one wet hot guy!!!

        Morning gentleman!

            I have not been myself for a few days now, but took off yesterday afternoon, as I was so tired I could not hardly keep my eyes open, and the pain has been creeping up on me again.

       While I have not had the chance to read through all of the replies yet...since I have been down, the answer to you both's questions....is YES! ....I snore badly...up all night long peeing...mouth dry as a bone to the point I can't feel my tongue.

     I just need to make an appointment and get it checked out. I never feel rested, or feel like I get a good nights sleep...and this has been going on for a very long time.

      Thanks for the suggestions, and it is good to see the both of you posting again...you both have been missed here on the forum.

       I apologies to the rest of the members, and have missed replying to many of you....however, like I said,..... I just have not been myself latley. Straydog has done a wonderful job filling in quite a bit of extra time, while some of the mod's have been dealing with health related isues.

   Ok!...just made an appointment next Tue with Dr to check for Apnea!

Hi Michael I'm happy to hear that you have the appointment. I really hope that you don't have sleep apnea, but if that's what it is, then it can be treated and you can get some real rest at night.

You might want to get your blood sugar checked as well as you're getting up so much to use the restroom and also are so thirsty. Are you real thirsty any other time? I'm thinking that you might want to get checked for diabetes as well.

I really do wish you good luck with this. I hope you're having a low pain night.

It sure sounds like you have it, ( sleep apnea)  the treatment for it is simple, but also it can be difficult as all get out to master and adjust to!  But it can be done!  I hope you get a sleep study scheduled and get it taken care of.  It could very well be causing allot of problems, I always thought thee sleep apnea fog was the worst part of it! It is actually being severely sleep deprived, you actually become kind of fuzzy, and grumpy and all you do is want to sleep but it never seems to really help! And sleep really doesn't help untill you get the sleep apnea properly treated.

 

If I may I would like to address this paragraph to Pete.  Pete it sure sounds like your sleep apnea is not being properly treated. Just because your doctor diagnosed you with sleep apnea, and put you on PAP does not mean that it is working or your being treated properly!  I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in Jan of 2007, and I was put on CPAP and it did not help so I was given supplemental oxygen to go with it and it still did not help, ( still had the night sweats and peeing all night long) in the next year and a half  18 whole months I had 5 in lab sleep studies done, and I went from CPAP to CPAP with oxygen to BiPAP with Oxygen and they kept raising my pressures and nothing worked! Finally my sleep doctor got sick and could not see oatients for several months, and I kept complaining so they sent me to another sleep doctor, he looked at my records and immediately said that I was having Central apneas and needed to have a ASV titration study, instead of regular CPAP or BiPAP that is used to treat Obstructive sleep apnea, the only machine made to treat Central Apneas is the ASV machine Adaptive Servo Ventilator, So I went and had another sleep study done  my sixth one in 18 months, and then I was put on the ASV machine, within two weeks after using this machine, the night sweats and nocturia completely disappeared, and within six weeks the sleep apnea fog started losing its grip on me and within another six weeks it to was completely gone! I then found out that the sleep center had been recommending the ASV  machine right from the beginning but my first sleep doctor did not believe in the machine he thought the technology was to new and not proven yet! Need I say this new sleep doctor is now my regular sleep doc! 

 

So Pete don't just accept that the treatment does not work, it does if you are getting the proper treatment, Central apneas are completely different from the regular obstructive sleep apneas. Central Apneas are when your brain quits telling you to breath, allot of things can cause this, congestive heart failure, injury to the upper spinal cord or brain stem, some neurological diseases, and the use of opoid pain medications, and even with some people the CPAP treatment its self will cause some people to have central apneas. So keep pressing your doctor for answers, and if your still not getting relief then go to a different doctor, Central apneas are often difficult to diagnose, and allot of Doctors do not treat them properly! I know mine could be caused by at least three different things, but the ASV machine does work and it will treat them, this machine is actually a ventilator, if you need any more info or if I can be of help to you or also you  SE let me know! I am a big advocate of this treatment. Sleep apnea can be really dangerous to your health it is allot more than just snoring!

           Although, I'm only at the point,... that I have a Dr's appointment....this post has turned into a very educational one for me, and many other's here...Pete being one of them!

      I also Thank my buddy Pete as well! Pete..I hope you read this reply from WB, and have yours checked out as well....WB really went all out here and pointed out some good information on this. I had no idea about some of the extra information on it...but did know about the CAPP.

       Again!.. Thank you for the detailed information....you did good Sir! wink  

    I will let you know what the results are, or if my Dr just brushes it off and throws a few sleeping pills at me. All I know,...is that I have been whining too much about it, and I feel tired all of the time....and I wake up worn out! shakehead

Oh man Michael, I hope they can give you some answers. I too was having alot of night sweats (still do at times) and like WhiteBeard mentioned I was checked for lymphoma.

I have a ton of other symptoms of lymphoma, the main one being swollen lymphnodes. I did have 2 removed from my neck awhile back (which is really the only way to dx it) and I came out clear!

So, I really don't know what could be going on with you. I wish I did. I assume mine is from the meds I take. I have also heard that some auto-immune diseases can cause night sweats. Please keep us posted, I sure hope you start feeling better!

Thanks for all the info W/B!!! That very well might be my problem!! I hate the doc I have, he is an idiot and I'm not going to see him again! The mask doesn't work properly evan though I had it fixed twice! It keeps blowing all the time and when I exhale, it blows the mask off my face! I'm gonna get a new doc but unfortunately, I have some other health issues to take care of first> What else is new?? I have an endoscopy (I'm sure thats the wrong spelling!) on Monday morning for fom stomac problems> I have a history of ulsers. Then I'm gonna have to do sopmething about my knee I tore up while up at my Mom's in N.Joizey! I slipped on a wet stair off her porch and took a nice fall messing up my left knee (already had two surgeries on it years ago and there is very little cartalage left.) I also hurt my left hip which I dislocated and shattered my pelvise back in 77' in a horade head on which chopped the driver (my good friend) in half! We were in a porsche w/ no engine in front and we hit a large station wagon! I also broke my neck in that one! I woke up 6 days later and was in traction on both ends! Don't know how I lived through that one and often think it should have been me instead of my younger friend who died that night!!!

Sorry to get side tracked! Anyway, the doc told me I'd need a new hip within 20 years> I'm a little overdue! By the way it's been hurting, I think I may have to git er done!

        I know it's not funny, but the vision of you blowing off the face mask made me laugh! Sorry Buddy! smilewinkgrin

          Man OH Man!....you have a lot of health issues on your plate!...sorry about that too! Hang on!....I at least want one more visit before you completely fall apart. Was kinda hoping you could spend the night with us again there in Florida...I will even grill a thick Ribeye for ya!

    We just did not get enough time with you, so glue yourself together...we are making plans again. 

         I hope this Apnea is not what's wrong with me....but the other possibilitys don't look good either. Let WB and I know what you find out on this....it would be interesting.

There is nothing pleasant about having to don a mask everynight and have a seemingly thousand mile an hour wind blowing into your mouth and up your nose and then trying to go to sleep like that. It is a challenge that is for sure! But the alternative is by far much worse. Untreated sleep apnea, can cause high blood pressure, and contribute to diabetes, and in some situtations, even a heart attack or stroke in your sleep! Not to mention the chances of falling asleep at the wheel while driving and the tragic results that can end up with. That scares me more than anything because that happened to me, before getting diagnosed and treatment, I woke up going sixty mile an hour down in the median of a major interstate! I was lucky but it scared me to death, not just the fact that it could have killed me, but if someone would have been in the car with me, or another car on the highway. ( I hate to think what the results would have been!)  When driving with untreated sleep apnea, it is just not your own life that is on the line,  but it is also everyone elses that is  sharing the roadway with you! And many insurance companies will not cover you if you are driving with untreated but diagnosed sleep apnea! And I have heard that  in some state they will actually proscute you for doing that!  Some real food for thought there!

 

Pete I can not tell you  how many mask I tried before I found one that really worked, infact a couple I used, I ended up modifing them to make them work better,  my mods are even posted on some of the sleep apnea forums. They finallly came out with a new mask that I really liked back  in 2009 and I have been using it ever since.  It can be a real challenge with finding a mask that will work for you, and everyone is so different,  but keep trying, I am sure there is one out there that will work, even if you  have to modify it or tweak it a little!  Yeah Pete, I  know how it is when you have other medical problems that need to be taken care of. But don't let it go to long,  sleep apnea can be life threatening in a lot of different ways!

 

You know I had been seeing some specialist up in chicago for my hip and lower back, they said both were a real mess, I was advised to avoid surgery on my lower back for as long as I could, but it they told me I have major nerve impingement at L-4/5 I just got a epidural spinal injection down there two and a half weeks ago, and it helped for about two weeks but now it is back to giving me problems. They told me my right hip is  part of the problem affecting my back and two surgeons now have told me I need to get a total hip replacement! But I am not ready to do that right yet!  I just don't want anymore surgeries for a while!

 

SE and Pete and everyone else, I have added a new member to my family!  about three or four weeks ago I got a puppy, her name is "Pumpkin" she is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, and she is a snuggler and my best buddy now! She was born the 2nd of June. SE I remember when you got your cat, do you still have her? Anyway I am not alone anymore, Pumpkin keeps me company!

WB feel free at any time to get information out that will be if interest to the membership,…even if you feel the need to use a post that was started on a different topic. I also know full well what you mean by falling asleep at the wheel, while driving, as I have done it twice in my life. The last time would have been fatal, had it not been for an alert passenger. To this day, I will pull over and sleep if I have too! A few years in Law Enforcement made me a much more keen and defensive driver as well.

Love the name "Pumpkin"…and I don't think I have ever heard that name given to an animal before! Excellent, and clever choice! Congrat's! Yes, we still have "Mieko" our male "Ragdoll cat. Lots of fun, and acts very much like a dog, except when he is in the mood to ignore, which happens more than not.

I myself really wanted a puppy, but did not think I could handle one recovering from my fusion surgery. However, if and when I retire, and have stopped traveling, I hope to get one at that time.

Were glad you got one, and I think you will enjoy her greatly. I'm sure she will make a great companion for you. They are usually very faithful, and generally ready to please. Can I assume this is an indoor dog? …..and since she is a Spaniel, I will assume that she will need plenty of exercise as well. I will look up that breed and take a peek at it.
