Accident prone places around the house

       I thought it would be nice to review a few of those accident prone places in and around the home and make a few recomendations for all to read here. As CP Patient's, we have to be extra careful! I will list a couple here, and hope other members follow suit with more suggestions.

     1. Tub/shower: I might suggest taking a trip to your local beauty and bath store, and purchase a non/slip mat. Also a shower rail might help as well....and if you really want to fix it up...buy one of those triangle type hangers the hospitals use, and hang it from the ceiling for support.

      2. Stairs: It's probably code, but make sure you have a good sturdy railing and use it! smilewinkgrin If the stairs are hard/wood you might want to get them carpeted with a thick padding, and make sure they are well lit. idea

      I have been keeping my eye on one of those walk in tubs you may see in the back of magazines. They are rather expensive, but I'm hoping I can get a medical tax write-off on it. I would just love to have one of them....just open the door...walk in and filler up!....oh and yes!...turn on the jets! Ahhhh! Soothing....and safer! Now!... where is my rubber ducky! tongue

I often wonder about those tubs. You would have to sit there and wait while the water drains before opening the door. I would get cold.

You said "around the home' so I would say my most dangerous place is outside.
The ice and snow terrify me. I am really scared of falling.
Answer:
Have good boots.
De-Ice alot.
Walk like a 90 yr old.

Kitchen - I nearly went bum over head yesterday after using non-stick spray on my baking, some went on the slate and it turned the floor into a slippery slide!

If you live in an ice and/or snow prone area consider getting some slip on spikes or other traction aid for your boots/shoes.

Consider getting some kind of bin or large can to keep just outside or even inside your door to store ice melt in. Make sure it has a good lid. I tried several things and found a pet food storage bin with a "locking" lid works really well.

great subject,as for the step in tubs ,you also need to have ahot water tank larger than 50 gallon ,and wait for water to drain .I was looking into getting one myself but the cost was too much! I really liked the idea of them ,so if you get one ,please post about it!I do hope everyone has a safe holiday ,if you use candles be careful also don't plug in too many christmas lights .take care and have a safe hoilday

I was looking at the walk in tub, and my husband brought up a great point. What do you do when they begin to leak? How much hot water does it need and will I really use it? We are thinking now of a whirlpool bathtub with an optional fold down shower seat and rails.

I find with the ice and snow, to have that can of ice melt out, and another of gravel kitty litter, the cheaper the better, and not the scoopable kind. It creates a great traction after the ice melt does its job.

Walking like a 90-year-old or pregnant woman can help too!

Ahhh, SE, you got it right on the money, one day after my appt (pm) doc., I was reaching up for something to make the kool aid, and low and behold, the enrtire heavy plastic  thing came down right down on the left side of my eye and parts around it.

The home can be a dangerous place sometimes, it seems I must really think hard about what it is I am trying but since I am still getting used 5'3". since I found I have lost 3 inches in the years since I injured my back in 1989. I know how silly it seems to be so upsset about 3 inches, but I cant help it.  I was 5'9" my entire adult life, I was 5,9 my whole life, I was always taller that both my girls, not I am the short one.  I only hope I wont lose to much before I turn 95 or so, I guess I will half to try harder.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on it, and once again I have to find ways to reach what I want, and get the things I need without having someone hear me calling because I having.

Outside......exposed raised tree roots from a pine tree in the yard. I didnt lift my affected leg up high enough and down ii went. Nothing broken but I was visibly shaken.

       ...all of these ideas and tips are excellant!...we just need to be mindful of our surroundings...and especially so,.. in the wintertime....with ice and snow. Take your time...if you have to get out into it...and don't be ashamed to ask for a helping hand if it's around. The last thing we need is another injury on top of what we are already suffering from. shakehead  

     I encourage you to identify potential problem areas in and outside your home, and seek a safer solution, should you have to deal with them on a daily basis.

 Also if your driving in the snow and such...make sure you have some sort of survival kit packed in the car with you....and make sure your phone is charged up fully before leaving the house. idea  

      Bottom line is!....be careful!!...and aware of the potential hazards.

Thanks Michael for starting this post.

We do all need to be careful, especially outside in the wintertime. Ice and snow can be the bad culprit of a lot of pain. I fell a few years ago on a sidewalk that looked like it didn't have anything on it, and I slipped down. Thank God it didn't hurt me bad enough to break a bone or anything.
