Last September, I got this pain in my left side where my waist is. I get funny looks when I explain the pain. When it is mild it feels like a stitch but when it gets worse, it feels as if something is twisting. My doctor could feel the spasm on the left side and suspected a bowel infection but no luck. Since then the pain on my left side has spread up to the bottom of my ribcage and the twisting pain has now become very bad on the right side. It was in so much pain last week, I went to A & E. Had an X Ray but nothing showed.The doctor suspected high acid levels in my stomach and gave tablets to neutralise the acid and take away the pain. This proved unsuccessful and the pain has worsened and has reduced me to tears. I am only 18 and I really cannot take this pain any more! No painkillers have any effect. I have seen several online threads about this problem but many are from years ago and don't state what is causing the pain. Is there anyone who has any information on this pain? Or experiencing it too?

Hi SickOfBeingInPain, sorry to read that you are having such a problem and no luck so far in finding a dr that can give a diagnosis. That is so frustrating. Now, this is nothing more than a wild guess, but has anyone checked out your gallbladder? I am at a loss as to what it could be, but the gallbladder does come to mind.

Anyway, I wanted to pop on and tell you welcome aboard and please let us know what you find out.

Thank you! The X Ray checked for gallstones etc and nothing showed. Will be returning to my doctor Monday will update then!

Maybe see about getting an ultrasound done, ultrasound can rule out possible Kidney/Liver problems,
maybe also get some blood work done.......could be the kidneys...Hope your doctor can help...
Keep us posted on this...don't really know, we can only give our best guess, did your doctor rule
out a possible hernia??? Many well wishes...Prayers that you can get a dx(diagnosis) soon....

I`m really sorry to hear about your pain. I don`t have any answers I`m sorry but I wanted to wish you all the best in coping and finding out what is wrong. I have very painful spasms (in a different area) too and they are really debillitating. Sometimes it feels like a knife is scraping inside me a bit like what you described (not a stabbing pain). With me the doctors haven`t been able to pinpoint anything causing them, Ì`ve had so many ultrasounds and tests but according to the doctors I look healthy. The only thing they`ve been able to guess as a cause is stress and depression, they said sometimes those things can cause pain.

Have you seen a pain specialist? With me that was the best thing I did
Eventually they found a medication that worked. I still have days when it doesn`t work very well and I`m in a lot of pain but it does help most of the time to at least make the pain more manageable. So what I wanted to say was don`t give up on finding something that helps even if it seems impossible. It took me about 4 years but it did eventually happen.

I started having severe abdominal pain when I was 14 (I'm only 18 as well now) and was diagnosed with Crohns disease and now AS which are sort of related. Anyways it took literally 4 Internists to find the problem after countless X-rays, CT's, Barium study, capsule studies, colonoscopy, etc. Make sure your doctor runs a full blood panel, do an ANA test, and doesn't "guestimate" but rather does tests too. If I didn't have a colonoscopy I'd be a step behind. I understand the pain part though...it sucks and if you ever run out of options and need to take narcotics be careful with how you ask...doctors always want to cure things, not mask them which is good in theory but in practice its not always possible.

There are so many organs packed into our abdominal that its no wonder we have Internists having problems finding the issue. Maybe its your liver? Maybe it could be psychosomatic (don't shut that idea down, I considered it long and hard)?

Thanks for the advice! The doctor has referred me to a specialist and has suggested an ultrasound and a colonoscopy but must wait on the specialists opinion. I have questioned psychological matters in the past. I will revisit this idea with the specialist.

I have come to my own conclusion that I have either a meat or red meat intolerance. For two weeks I went on a strict vegetarian diet and became pain free. A week into the diet I had pepperoni on my pizza (two slices) and felt the pain in my side about an hour afterwards. Last night I had a ham (1 slice) and cheese toastie and could feel the pain in my side shortly after. I will be testing a small bit of chicken this evening. I will bring this up with my doctor tomorrow morning. I hope this might help somebody else too.
