Wow....you guys have been great!!!
I am very surprised to read some of the information given...especially since I do take the oxy ir, xanax xr, and soma...as well as ultracet, and a variety of other non-pain related meds. I ALWAYS give a printed sheet of the meds I take to every Dr at every appointment and I never had a problem with anyone about what I take. Even the decision to stop taking the ambien (20 mg) was mine and mine alone. The Dr supported it, but I was never questioned on really abusing the meds.
Like most of the members here, I just don't take what I'm not supposed to. I even looked back at my pharmacy info this week (there is a great online site that allows you to link to your pharmacy to refill meds without calling...it also lets you see when you last filled and what you have remaining). I noticed the other day that I had tons of expired pain meds/xanax and other things that I could have filled or could still fill, but I don't do that because they are not my current regimine. It's so strange to me to fill, fill, fill and then take them inappropriately. I just want pain relief.
I honestly appreciate the information given on this thread and, for the medical professionals, I'd like to say that your opinion was greatly appreciated too. Despite the fact that I cannot take many of the "substitute" meds, I still somewhat agree with what you are saying. I guess I can't fully agree because I am one who has issues with many meds and finds that some don't cause reactions, where most do.
In particular, the zanaflex makes me feel like my throat is closing up and I can't get air. Oh, don't get me wrong, it knocked me out like lightening, but I don't want that effect anyway. I have reactions to flexiril and skelaxin too, but I have yet to try the baclofen (so we will see). The worst that can happen is that I loose all muscle relaxers again. I didn't take them for years, but they help SO much!.
I am one who has had the surgery, does follow up with appointments, does provide good records, does use only one pharmacy (except for my med for pituatuary disorder that must come from a speciality pharmacy), and does communicate w/my Dr's as I should. I take every drug screen without problems (except that my xanax shows up as if I haven't taken it from 2-5 days...which is not correct). Even this I pass on to my prescribing Dr.
So, I want to thank you all for your valuable information. I will post if there are reactions/problems after the transition and will try to adjust the dose of my soma down over then next few days to help with the transition. It's so hard to give up a med that works so well, but I do understand that rules are rules....I just don't like them. I wish the abusers would just go away and leave the meds to the ones who really need them. It would make life so much easier for those doing the right thing and prevent us from jumping through hoops to have some quality of life.
