For those of us who live in the United State, this weekend is a holiday for us. It is
"Memorial Day", and was originally called
"Decoration Day" Memorial Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, as Decoration Day, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. Today, this holiday is observed on the last Monday in May.
Each year I search the internet for information on this Holiday, and as I do…I seem to learn more and more about
it. For instance,…. did you know that on Memorial Day, the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.
The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.
I am sincerely thankful for the freedoms we have, and enjoy in this country, because of the ultimate sacrifice these great men and women gave. God Bless them and their families!
After the start of the 20th century, Memorial Day has also commonly become a tradition for families to honor and reflect the passing of all loved ones, wether they served in the military or not. Many do this by visiting and decorating their loved ones grave sites, and or getting together with other family members for a BBQ and many other activities including shopping.
Please take a moment to check out the links below, for a full and complete explanation of this traditional day of remembrance.

As Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada states: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.”
Please feel free to share your memories of family members, who gave their lives in service for this wonderful country.
Enjoy your Holiday weekend, and please be safe if you are traveling!
