Nucynta VS Percocet

My Father-In-Law was taking Percocet and it was helping him. His new doctor took him off the percocet, because he feels it's too addictive and that as his body adjusts to it, his dose will have to keep being increased. In it's place he prescribed something called Nucynta...His doctor says it's an Opiod, like Percocet, but less addictive. I researched Nucynta for him and most people seem to get less pain relief from Nucynta vs Percocet. Also many people complain about more side effects from Nucynta. Apparently, both are Schedule II narcotics...Has anyone been on Nucynta? If so can you talk about your experience with it. If you have also been on Percocet, could you please describe your level of pain relief and side effects with the 2 medications? Thank you for any feedback.

I personally got more pain relief and longer lasting relief from Nucynta than from Percocet-5. However, Nucynta is more specifically geared towards neuro pain so some might benefit greatly from it while others, not so much.

I have sucessfully reduced my pain from a level 8 to a level 0 with Nucynta on a few occasions, however like most medications there are times that substantial pain relief did not come through for me. Again for my pain, I prefer the relief Nucynta gives over percocet and would much rather have it prescribed than percocet for chronic pain relief. I was on it for several months before I noticed any genuine increase in tolerance, so for me it builds tolerance at about 1/2 the speed of percocet. (side note: my trail with hydrocodone after the min invasive surgery failed, the pain level was not reduced enough for vicodin 5 mgs to be effective, so I'm back on the tapentadol with better results).

You should be aware that nucynta IS a real opioid that IMO is stronger in its narcotic activity than hydrocodone and tramadol but weaker than that of morphine and oxycodone. However, what makes nucynta better for nuero pain is its additional norephedrine reuptake inhibitor properties which seem to account for nearly half of its pain relief action. From all the studies I read up on it, its anti depressant effects are more potent than those of tramadol. I can vouche for that from personal experience.

Please only take what I say as personal experience. Please discuss these issues with your doctor and pharmacist. I'm not an expert by any means and even if I have read many studies and have personal postive experience, its a decision you, your father in law, and his doctor should come to in joint agreement. :)

A few words of advice from my personal experience. The 75mgs dose of nucynta seems to be equal to percocet (oxycodone) at the 10 to 15 mg level. Also, this stuff CAN be addictive and I have had my prescription of it stolen before (the person had be secretly taking a tablet here and there while they were living with me and became hooked, said person is no longer living with me thank God). HOWEVER, in my personal opinion this medication is less addictive than oxycodone and hydrocodone. I've discussed the addiction risk with my doctor and they stated that they believe this medication to be of low risk for addiction. Also, please make sure your grandfather remains well hydrated while taking this medication. I can't stress this point enough. This medication can dehydrate you. It can also make you dizzy and have mild distortions if you accidentally take the doses too close together. Also, please watch for symptoms of seratonin syndrome.

Good luck sir, and I hope this helps. I think the medication might work very well for him, but it really depends on the main cause of his pain and how his body accepts the medication. for me its a mericle drug, but a lot of people dislike it.

I have been on percocets which I will call perks my dr said they peak like mountains up and down I take them and nucyunta er I find I take less percocets iam given 5 a day on perks and nucynta perks 10-325 nucytna 200 but the nucytna takes awhile to work maybe 90 mins the nucy has to be time released nucytna ER and it lasts on me about 11 so it has helped me a great deal I have cut down on the perks maybe 2 aday compared to 5 perks I would feel like I was eating perks and still in pain ,so nu to me with perks is working well but I take 200 mg please talk to your dr about all you have told us it takes a few times to find out what works for you I do agree with the other s on this (extended release ) MAKES THE DIFF
