Had to leave our 5 yr old sheltie at the ER vets

It is 12:20 am and I have a thundering headache from crying so much.  I took her to local vets at 5:30 pm f and more tests.   vomiting and bloody diahrehha and lathargic.  They used 2 bags of Iv saline and gave her antiobiotic and pain med and finally her blood was thinned enough to be able to draw a specimen.  Her blood was thick and sluggish and Im hoping that she didnt suffer a stroke.  She needs more monitoring for the next 12 hours.  I gave the er vet $1000 to get things started.  He will call me with results of the tests soon in the morning hours. 

 

Isnt it something how attached and loving we give to our family dogs?  They are family.    What kind of pets does everyone have?  We have 2 sheltie dogs.  One just barely clinging to life and the little boy dog is looking all around the first floor of our house for his companion.  I feel sorry for him.

 

My headache is still with me

Oh Betsey, I know exactly how you are feeling right now - I'm so sorry your 'baby' is so sick. I will send a puppy prayer her way. We have 4 cats and they are a huge part of our family. We just recently lost 'Jason' - my younger son's kitty and it broke our hearts. It all happened so fast and it was awful. Yes, they are definitely part of the family - unconditional love!

Oh Betsey how terrible. We are parents to 3 pomeraniuns, 2 toy, 1 standard. All of them are rescued dogs the toys are sisters but from different batch different sires. We have had the little ones for 11 years and the boy for 5 years. I would be devastated if anything happened to my kids. My one little one loves to escape she has narrowly escaped being ran over a week ago so she is only allowed outside on a leash. We will send special puppy prayers out for you and yours.

I have no pets but I know how attached you must be to your beloved dog. I really hope the vet gives you good news. Why is it that anything 'medical' in the US costs so much. I am appalled at what you pay. Are these men and women, doctors and vets etc, really rich. Does all the money go to them? I know they have overheads but surely that does not equate to the fortunes they charge. I feel for you.

Jane the entire staff at the ER for animals are employees. Each gets a certain salary. The vet was 6ft 7 in tall a big stapping man in surgical scrubs. He triaged my girl and then talked to us. We made it clear that if her heart stops, congestive heart failure etc, pain that cant be relieved then call me I will be there in 45 minutes and then put her down. I hope that it wont come to that.

My headache came back She has fluid in her abdomen. No clotting factor. Elevated liver enzymes. They gave her vitamin K for the liver. She is looking around the room.

She still has bloody poo. They dont know how she got to be this way. It came on all of a sudden.

Yesterday morning I purchased 2 halloween dog costumes for my babies.

I am so upset. I slept 3 hours last night.

Hi Betsy,

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog! I know that these large emergency/specialty hospitals are very expensive, (and frankly, even many of us in the veterinary field don't quite understand it) but a hospital of this nature really is the best place for her to be right now. They are able to provide unrivaled 24 hr care and state of the art diagnostics, treatments, and monitoring that smaller clinics cannot.

I know how hard this must be for you. Besides having four dogs myself (2 are mine, and 2 belong to my parents, with whom I'm currently residing), in addition to other pets, I'm also a veterinary student, and have worked as a veterinary technician both part time and full time for the past 9 yrs. Animals touch us in ways that we cannot even describe. I see it every day. Part of the reason why I am still pursuing my veterinary degree, despite all my health problems, is that I want to be able to do everything I can to help preserve those unique bonds between human and animal. Quite frankly, I owe my life to my animals, past and present, and I think that most of us here with pets could say that their pets help keep them keep going -- keep fighting, even when we are feeling our worst. To many of us, our animals are our family members, or our "kids." So naturally, when they hurt, we hurt too. It is all the harder that they don't have the capacity to speak to us, and to tell us what is wrong, or how to help them.

Hang in there! I wish I had better advice, but keep the faith, and know that your veterinary team is doing everything they can to help your girl. I'm certainly praying for her myself!

Betsey, so sorry to hear of your dogs' situation. Hope it resolves in the way you are wanting.

We have a boston terrier, a tabby striped cat, and a snow show siamese cat.

It was just 2 years ago, that we had to down our long term family dog, Sandy, she was a large breed mutt, and she had turned 20 years old, incredible. Each of our kids grew up with her when they were little.

Hope things are going better for you and your sheltie. We have and show Maine Coon cats and during my darkest time Stovch our first show cat kept me alive. I had only his shows to look foward too and he kept winning. He lived until 15 we lost him in 2007. Right now we have 5, 3 14 year olds from the same litter, one 4 year old girl and a 19 lb one year old. They are our life and would do anything for them. At times they keep me going.

She went into sepsis and bloody poo pouring out of her bottom. No platelets to coagulate blood. Wed morning I laid down beside her and held her while the vet made her sleepy and then gave her medicine to stop her heart.

I miss her so much. Im crying again I brought her back to our local vet to cremate her. She was my older child but still young 5 yrs old gosh just a pup.

All my neighbors know what happened to our family.

Oh Betsey, I honestly don't know what to say. I am so sorry, I can sense that you and her had a special bond. Of course you want to cry,you cry all you need and we are here for you when you want to talk.

Betsey, I am so sorry. I don't have any pets, not because i don't want any, just that my husband is severely allergic, but i did have dogs growing up. It was always awful to lose them, it seemed to hurt more than anything because they are the one thing that gives unconditional love.. Praying for you.

I'm so sorry Betsey...It's always a terrible time when we have to let our beloved pets go. Thankfully it is in such a way that is filled with love in your arms and without pain.

I am crying and blowing my nose again. My little boy sheltie had to given a mini composure med inside a treat to calm him down. he kept pacing looking for her.

Last night when I went to bed there wasnt a warm dog beside me in bed so once again I lost it.

Husband tried to console me but there was no consoling. I was the one that was there with till the end and that is all I see in my mind.

Vision is blurry, teared filled eyes.

I went back to vet to pick up a plaster paris heart shaped paw imprint of her little paw and her collar. I lost it at the vets office.

Next thursday I will have her cremated remains back home with us.

I am so sorry...

I know exactly how you are feeling. I have had to do this twice, our 14y/o lab and 5 y/o beagle. Our lab, Dusty, would lightly claw the door or wall to let us know he had to go out. I swore I could still hear him doing this for days after wards and I broke down every time.
They say it makes it easier to get another one soon, but I don't believe that. You do bring in another family member though and it might be helpful for the young Sheltie.

If it's not too forward, would you tell me what brand of food you feed them? We actually went through almost the exact same thing with our 8 y/o Lab/Aussie and we figured it had to be the food we were feeding them. Even though our Aussie didn't get sick Brittney would not go near the food once she got sick and it was 7 days before she ate again. We changed her food and she has been doing fine since. We were using Old Roy and have heard from other people they had issues with this brand as well.

Oh Betsey I'm so sorry that you lost your baby. Yes, I believe our pets are part of the family. ((((((((hugs))))))) You cry all you need to sweety. It's so very hard to go thru.

My Samatha ate Purina one healthy weight because she was pudgey. One cup in morning and one cup at supper. She refused to eat after she vomited on tuesday. And it went downhill from there.

Not enough time to prepare yourself for the upcoming death of your pet . 12 hours was all we had.

Betsey, I hate to ask this right now but is there any chance that your pup had parvo? Many years ago we had a samoyed who had what sounds like the exact same symptoms and it was parvo. Even though I'm sure your vet considered, I wanted to ask because of your other pup.

no parvo she was 6 yrs old. The symptoms were similar but it was something with 5 syllables gastro............. It was incurable and some dogs survive and others dont. My didnt survive. I miss her so much.

The hurt is so deep.

Oh Betsey, I know how much it hurts and I'm so sorry. It WILL get better, I promise. Just let yourself grieve - there's no right or wrong way and there are no time limits. Be good to yourself. I'm thinking of you......

I am so sorry for your loss. Our pets become such a huge part of our families.

We have a cat that is almost 17 years old. He's getting very frail. He's not eating and is loosing weight. I think we may be faced with making a choice about him.

Just give yourself time to grieve. I know how hard it is. We put down our other cat in 2001. She was 18, I cried for days and our current kitty missed her so much. I hope things start to get better.
