Trigger Finger Surgery

I had trigger finger release on my thumb in January, and it was only swollen for about 2 weeks. In April, I had 3 fingers done on my other hand as well as carpal tunnel release. The swelling lasted about a month for most of those. I do have one that is still swollen. The original surgeon said it can be swollen for up to a year. However, after just under 3 months I was sent back to the surgeon who did not see it as a problem. On the advice of my OT, I saw another surgeon who said that it should not still be swollen after a month but because I had so much done, it could have lasted two months. End result he did see it as a problem and we are working on it. I would ask your surgeon about it if it is still swollen.

A few positive things that helped me with trigger finger problems:

Just had trigger finger released via surgery Fri 8/24/12 (right ring finger). I had no idea that I'd have such a bulky bandage for 2 weeks. I am right handed and I haven't finished our 2011 taxes!!! On day 4 now and movement is just fine altho I feel stretched to straighten my treated finger, I can close my palm easily, without any catch. My MD has me making fists and straightening my hand for 2 minutes every hour. After reading about all the "adhesion" problems on this blog, that may be a good preventative measure. My husband came up with a great way to keep my hand above my elbow and shoulder while sleeping that may be helpful to others having this surgery. He took a very soft t-shirt and tied it to the headboard at a level just comfortable and at the right height. It is a sling, but I still do the exercises and shift positions within it.

I had just local anesthesia and it was a piece of cake. I did have her numb is up for the day rather than just an hour or two. I only had to take 2 rounds of aspirin on the next day, and I'm not even sure I needed that. Incredibly painless procedure.

I had this surgery done because I play tennis, piano, garden and cook. Only piano playing didn't bother it. I did have all my other finger joints having this problem, but I was able to rub very precisely the little nodes and all of the other fingers resolved by themselves. This last joint just would not resolve by itself and with my self treatment system after 9 months. It was tender to rub out those nodes one at a time and luckily, they only would occur one at a time, but it was worth it. Both hands were working great.

I refused the cortisone shot because after reading about it, I don't trust that stuff in my system.

Also, my older sister had one of her fingers released surgically and she had absolutely no residual effects and was very glad that she had it done. That was a few years ago.

Hello all, I need some support. My 12 month old has just had surgery on her trigger thumb. She was in a cast for three weeks, now it has been taken off but she is in pain. Our MD instructed us to straighten her thumb out when it locks but she won't let me touch it! Every time I can straighten it I feel the tissue tearing. She is so little. I'm not sure what to do.
