Ahh...I didn't realize this isn't a PM Dr. but a Primary...
As Shell mentioned...PM Drs. are a speciality and because things are getting much tighter with controlled substances....all non PM Drs. are going to have to go through more training and certification if they want to treat patients for "chronic" pain which is longer than 3 months. It's unfortunate because I think most of them all had good intentions for helping their patients but PM treatments are just not their forte and they don't know much about
medications and all the modalities used.
I know a few people on the boards are still being treated by Primarys or other non PMs...but many of them will phase out over the next few years treating pain patients long term.
I look at it this way...I wouldn't go to my Primary to get surgery on my spine..I go to a Board Certified Neurosurgeon..
So, for my chronic pain...I go to a Board Certified Pain Mgmt. Dr...Mine has a background in Anesthesiology..All he does is treat people who have both acute or chronic pain and is up on every single new treatment or medication there is...
That is why it's worth the drive to find someone that you really click with and whom is knowledgeable in this area to work out the best comprehensive plan for you...There are some PMs that are non medicinal...so that is something to be aware of...
Mine does everything from acupuncture, PT, injections, to medications and everything else in between..
Believe me...I've been where you are as I had a terrible time after my 2nd disaster fusion surgery and it took a few months and quite a few PM appts. until I found the Drs. I have now..
So keep looking and hope you will find someone soon!
