I suffered from work related leg injury April 2006. A 50 lb wooded skid fell against my left leg. There was a large hematoma which needed to be drained. I had swelling, bruising to the leg and foot. I was booked for a scope in the right knee for may. The surgeon aspirated the hematoma while I was under. The scope healed before the I was getting pins and needles really bad at night, my leg felt dead. Prolonged sitting, standing would increase the pain I had decreased walking ability. Sleeping was really disturbed and lots of muscle spams They gave me Nortriptyline which did nothing I was on cymbalta 60 mg twice a day and Zytram Xl 200 daily. Clonazepam 0.5  and Zopiclone 7.7 at bed time.I walk with a antalgic gait pattern. Tenderness over the the Pes anserine tendon. Tinel's has mildly positive over the fibular head and decreased sensation on left led.Tightness of the gastrocnemius and achilles tendons, weakness in quadriceps and VMO.

From 2007 to 2008 I did small jobs and always had to leave do to not being able to do the work and standing even with compreion stockings. WSIB denied my claim saying it had nothing to do with my leg I appealed it and won. Thats when I was diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy involving my left leg. So I received lost wages form 2008 to 2010. Then they put me in physiotherapy.

 In 2010 My leg started all over like a new injury. I could not get out of bed, I could not feel my bed. I was to work that day and called in sick. Seen my Dr and he said we will do some more testing, my leg was like a balloon again. Then I was diagnose of Zygaphyseal facet joint irritation in the dorsolumbar spine, myofascail pain syndrome in cervicoscapular left lower extremity, all this over manipulation during physiotherapy. I denied at that time radiation of pain down my leg to my feet and weakness, numbness or prosthesis. But it sure came soon after.

Thats part 1 WSIB said it was not related to my injury.

Part 2- WSIB put me in retraining,I said OK as long as I can do it. This was April pf 2011. They wanted some upgrading first. It was to be in school for 6 hours a day sitting. We were able to walk around. I did 3 days and was off for 4, it almost killed me. I also suffer from Fybromalgia and arthritis. My Dr. sent me back to school with a Dr. note saying I was only able to do 4 hours and not 6. WSIB would not accept this. They said I do it or get cut off. I did like 3-4 and just signed out in pain always. November of 2012 I developed very acute pain in my back and went right down my leg. I was not able to attend school/ college. My Dr. ordered a rush MRI . Results were annular tear at L3 L4 and small disc protrusions at L4 L5 S1 level herniated disc at L5 S1. I am now on Dilaudid for pain with my regular medication as well. They ordered another one, last week, just waiting on the reports and also going Sunday for MRI on my knees they are giving out on me.With all this about my back, WSIB cut me off and suspended the last of my college course. Because they feel my back has no dealing with my left leg.

Welcome many, I also think I welcomed you in a thread of someone's but wanted to do so properly on your own.

Welcome Manyissues, So nice to meet you. So sorry to read that WC cut you off and it is ridiculous to think that your back isnt part of your in jury.

First, welcome. Secondly, it should not be difficult to find a physical therapist (not necessarily a doctor) to back you up in an appeal. PT's know more about body mechanics than MD's do, because that's what they work with every day.

Secondly, a change in gait can cause back problems. Any change in body mechanics can cause problems in other areas.

Example, my grandfather developed bursitis in his right shoulder, even though he was left handed. He was a farmer, and farmers usually maintain and fix their own equipment. So he would put a wrench on a nut, grip with his strong left hand, but push off with his right arm for more leverage. Took the docs forever to find out why a left handed man developed that problem on the "wrong" shoulder.

That's when I noticed that I had more than a sore back, when my gait changed. Plus the wear pattern on my shoes became evidence of this as well. And it's self-feeding. The more it hurts, the more it changes, so the more it hurts.

Thank you for the warm inviting welcome. I never real thought about the Gait, OMG thanks for the tip idea . I will add that to my list. I have been researching myself as well. Yes I have someone fighting for me. My family Dr. is also my pain Dr. I see his at 2 different locations. He has written many letter for me. But they just keep saying no. The issue at hand is " if they accept my back then they have to go back from the start and adjust the NEL that was given. They said body loss in 2010 was 4% but to full body 2% and thats how they paid 600 NEL. That was crazy.

So now I wait for an appeal date, could take up to 2 years again. But I will wait. As for now I will do the MRI Sunday on both knees and see where that can tie in as well. yeah

Hi ManyIssues & welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate to deal with. I am not familiar with the term WSIB, can you tell us what that stands for? I do hope your appeal goes through in your favor. If I understand they are denying treatment on your back but you are able to get care for your left leg. Will they pay for the MRI for the right leg?

So glad to hear that your dr takes good care of you, that is half of the battle right there is having a good dr, on board.

Susie, WSIB is workers safety insurance board. When you get hurt, you get your pay at a % from them. Thats correct they look after the leg and thats it. MRI here is covered by our province insurance.

Susie,it seems this is simply the new name or initials but the old workmans comp. Carries with it the same set of problems and they're always trying to find a way to say you did something wrong so they don't have to pay.

WSIB sent me to physiotherapy in 2011. To get me ready for retraining program to go back to work.

 Prior to that I was sent to see an orthopedic surgeon that they sent me to. He stated I was not employable die to CPS, fybro, until my pain was under control. And restrictions. No bending ,lifting, not standing long,not sitting long. no stairs.

 Then boom physiotherapy for my body. During this time my sciatic nerve went out and had missed a week from Physio. They were on my case. I faxed a Dr. letter to them. That why in my Dr. report it states during physiotherapy my back was manipulate. They were giving me acupuncture for it , every other day,

When it was over then sent me to be retrained. I had to do upgrading first. I have my grade 12 but if you don't use it you lose it. lol After 3 6 hour days I was dead. Dr. put me out for a few days. It was to hard 6 hours a day. Sitting and doing work , math English language skills. all to prepare me for college. My Dr. gave a letter for me to do 4 hours a day and WSIB said no. Well I did what I could and just signed out each day in pain. We were able to go walk around, but still on your feet.

College starts and its 5 hours long. even better. But sitting on computer for 5 hours a day. I started all this in April of 2012. College was sept 2012. I was taking Administrator Executive Assistant. Marks were all amazing. Darn I did better now then as a child. Then came Nov 10. I could not get up from my chair. It took time but did it. I had pain in my spine butt and right down my leg and toes. Thats where this new journey began.

Vickie...Just FYI, but because manyissues is in Canada, things are named differently there...So I don't think anything has changed in the U.S. as far as the term for Worker's Comp.

But I do agree that things work the same in both countries where they try to cover as little as possible! LOL

hi rose....just saying hello....big mechanical trouble with my van wheelchair lift. a remote control wire got stuck in the lift yesterday and it died. its cold out there and i need to fiddle around with it. i couldnt close the rear of the van and it snowed. i'm waiting till i have my tenth cup of coffee...
how those hands and feet doin....pal pete

Thanks Rose for explaining about your worker's comp situation. We have had some members come here that were hurt at work & the insurance company was denying their claims too. Its almost like it is a trend to deny the claims. Just awful. Seems like all its about is saving them money. I hope your situation gets all worked out.

Thank you straydog. That the thing with them. Push you so much and hope that you don't fight back. Not this chick. LOL It is happening to many more people these days. Even people that are pensioned and sendingthem fore retaining. Its crazy, they figure get you working until 65, off their payroll.

Well was supposed to have both knees MRI today. They said because Of my herniated disc, they could only do 1 at a time. Now I have to reschedule for the left one. I was hurting bad so I guess they were right.

rose isnt it amazing how the pain occupies our brains. we are stuck in this rut and we want some relief. we wake up in the morning and pray it wont be too bad. we talk and chat with others here trying to find others who can relate to us. we all fight so hard but yes we fight and that gives us hope that there are some good days just around the corner. so rose we hit the hay and lets see what tomorrow brings.... pal pete

Well Pete its morning, it was another rough night. Can't sleep on my back and not on left side. The right side is getting tired of all this, since Nov 10. Bright side I see the surgeon Feb 12. So I know I will know what he is going to do with me.
True statement Pete, it does take or mind off our pain for a bit. I love to try and help others and you are the same. I have a true friend the day I meet you.

Another day of not being able to do much. It hurts to lay down , walk, stand. Time for more pain meds I guess. I am wondering what will they do for herniated disc, l4 l5 S1.Not sure if spinal fusion is the only way.
