Hi Pete,
I have a power wheel chair and a manual purple one as well and of course a bright red scooter. After my first back surgery, as I was loosing my ability to walk and stand for any length of time, my physiatrist felt that I would need them and I did.....but I am stubborn and didn't want to give in, although I used them for some months after...but I refused to give in and kept using a 5 prong cane, which I still use to this day, as well as afo's.....I have found that as long as I keep fighting, I have a reason to keep going. I have 4 kids, two girls and two boys. My older two are the girls, one 20 and one will be 18 in a few weeks....my sons are only 13 and 11.. They were even younger when all of this started and I just couldn't not try.....I always told my kids that no matter what life throws at you, you pick yourself up and keep going....so I do.
I find joys in the little things in life, knitting for a few hours, playing with my kids and my puppy..she's my little love now...and I find something to make me smile each day.......
I'll bet those grandkids keep you going.....and you are giving them memories , they will treasure and I'm sure you already do.
Do you do any wood carving? I always wanted to learn how to do that.....
Keep excercising, it does help to preserve some of the muscle and we all know how important it is to keep moving, even when it hurts. Laying around does nothing but makes things that much more difficult.....

good morning everyone on saturday the day the kids are around...
lea...you fall again and i told you what i'd do...lol
rose up and at em...
sandi thanks for your midnight note. my daughter plopped a plate of chinese in front of me on the floor as i read it lol...
you said AS LONG AS I KEEP FIGHTING I HAVE A REASON TO LIVE...now that hit home my friend. i have a picture of myself in a sunny field and only able to wiggle one little finger. but yes its mving and i'm smilin....
oooo i want a dog but wife says no. too much work. i say no i can do it. i love dogs they are there for you and visa vera...
you cant call me a wood carver YET but i too wish to try it. when i saw up small kindling i visualise sanding the left over pieces and forming them into a modern abstract piece...wood carving could be good therapy...
my grandsons here as he slept over last night. he's next to me on the floor now and of course hes n the computer. the kids a genius and loves biology. he knows so much i think he could teach it now...
my kids are both girls 29 and 30. the 30 yr old is going in hosp any minute for 3rd boy...
i remember fighting to keep walking back 12 years ago. i could walk a mile on crutches and i said i would walk a mile every day till i died. but i wasnt able to keep it going. now i grab a railing and hold on for dear life flexing my knees. but i know i will do this for the rest of my life....
well sandi the chinese food is gone, the sun is shining and i'm sure you have that breakfast going to feed those
open mouths....keep on fightin....pal pete

Morning Pete,
It sounds wonderful at your house this morning. My two sons just left on a winter overnight camping trip with their Scout Leader...it's cold here, but I packed them extra thermals and hats and gloves, so they will be warm.
Working with the wood sounds like wonderful therapy and you never know , you might find an interested buyer somewhere. You'd be surprised what people pay for , and how they are willing to pay someone with an eye for designs. You should really give it a try.
I know that if my canal closes anymore and it will eventually, I will need those chairs again, but for now, I only need them on occassion, so I keep them. I have found that I use the scooter more for longer distances, because walking a distance is still tough for me, but for now, I can make do with the cane for the most part.
We had a dog, for almost 17 years but he passed away two summers ago, and we were devastated so I didn't want to get another dog for a long time, but my new girl, is a crapzu-maltese , not even 5 pounds ( she only weighed 2 pounds when we got her) is my joy...she loves me and my family like there is no one else in the world and she jumps to almost 3 feet when we come home , and kisses us as if we are her sun, moon and stars...she has us all completely wrapped around her tiny paws. I wish that I could send you a picture, you'd see why we love her so much...
You might love a small dog, and I'll bet that you would find having one a huge addition to your days, especially on the bad ones. I have found that when I am having a tough day, she knows and seems to watch over me that much more..she's a wonderful companion. Want me to talk to your wife? I can convince her... :o)

Pete, seems like you were going to do a trial for a pain pump, did that ever happen? It seems like you would be a good candidate for a pump. At my last refill almost 2 weeks ago,the computer showed that the low battery is now showing on my pump. This battery has lasted a long time, so its time for a new pump to be put on.
I read that you sleep on the floor, wow, I don't know how in the world you pull that one off. I cannot sit in the floor let alone even think about
sleeping on it. If I sit more than 15 minutes on my brick hearth I am in trouble, the same with metal chairs. I know you said you have a wheelchair, are you able to use it? Is there something wrong with the fit now of your wheelchair?
Take care.....Susie

hi susie....well here i am on a saturday night flat out on my family room floor...
for me its heaven because no nerves in my spine are being pinched. the sag in a mattress of just an inch puts a strain on the nerves but the floor doesnt sag[even under my weight...lol]
because my bones have thickened i'm more sensitive to nerve impingement...
sitting for me is terrible mainly because my sciatic nerve is inflamed and we all know where that sciatic nerve is, in the back of our. legs. in fact that may be the reason lots of us have trouble sitting. i recommend to all spinies to try sitting on the very end of their seat so there is less surface area pushing on the sciatic. i'd rather my hip bone and coccyx take the pressure.
i am awaiting a pain pump trial. i am praying it helps.
does it help you? are you a spinie?
by the way i love dogs too and i'll make you an offer you cant refuse....a full day of weeding your garden for one hour of patting your two dogs....pal pete

Thanks for answering my questions, hope you can get your pain pump trial soon! Do keep us posted on that, it's good your trying to stay as active as possible. I finally got out yesterday and did some yard work, hate the yard work, everyone here uses a mowing service except us and get this those mowers blow all the leaves into the street and they always seem to find our yard, all those leaves, my hubby and I were out there for 3 hours and we still have lots of leaves yet to get cleaned up! Let the leaf war begin, eh...I might blow them out into the street, sure would be nice if those leaves just blew away.

Pete to answer your question about
the pump, yes it does help my pain. My pain is under much better control with the pump than with oral meds. With the pump you have continuous coverage. Oral meds you have the peaks & valleys plus you turn into a clock watcher because you are looking to see when you can take the next dose. There is no comparison between the two. The key to a successful pump is to have a dr that knows all about
pumps & what medications to use in one. If he does not know any of this then a person is dead in the water & the pump will be useless. I still have pain but its a pain that is tolerable. I do have medication for BT pain, which I rarely use. I take Ibuprofen for BT pain. I am much more active than before & much better QOL. In fact I need a new pump because my battery is dying and I am in the process of getting a new pump put in. I see the surgeon this coming Tuesday.
I do hope that your trial is a successful one. You will know if the pump is for you or not when you do the trial. Having pump refills are no big deal & painless. You do not feel the needle going in because it is going in the pump portal. To me having blood taken from my arm is more painful than having a pump refill. I hate doing blood work.
I do spend a lot of time outside working in my yard in my flower beds. It is my release and I enjoy it and love being outside. Soon our weather will be that I can spend more time outside rather than inside & I cannot wait.
Take care....Susie

susie....thanks for your comments on the pump. the pm doc i have is very experienced. i am rather optimistic about
it. my condition keeps getting worse so it would be good if something helped for a change....and yes bring on the warm gardening weather...
rose the narcotics for the pain pump are in a reservoir that gets implanted in your belly. a tube brings the drug to a catheter that goes into the epidural area of your spine. the docs try to get the best dose for the individual. i guess it takes a while to balance things off properly. when everything is adjusted properly you only go in once every three mos to get a refill of your narcotic. the good thing is your head stays pretty clear as the narcotic for the spine is about
1/1000 of the strength that is given orally.
i was able to get my power lift back into the van but it still doesnt work so hopefully they will fix it monday or tuesday....so no taking my wife out to eat this weekend...pal pete

Hey Pete....
Welcome back. I've been on here several years... but we must have missed each other before..... (I've spent time off the board off/on over the years).
Anyway.... I've got multiple pain/health issues.... I also have eight kids.... six of which I had before my pain/health issues started.... and surprise twins that came along years after the boys.... Being on here for me, at least, is a brief escape from the insanity of the kids, house and managing my health - which is a FT job in itself.
Just wanted to say hello. I like your sense of humor. I gotta keep laughing each day or I'd give up, lol..... Take care and hope to get to know you better.

hi tina...with 8 kids there isnt much time to kid around so we better make sure our jokes are good. youve really got your hands full being a mod here in addition to everything else. the old adage of if you want something dome give it to a busy person must certainly apply to you....pal pete

these storm days are great arent they. every joint needs some wd40. i figured i could get the arms moving by just rubbing on a table top. it did help while i was doing it for about
15 minutes but when i stopped the stiffness and pain returned.
the wheelchair lift mechanic did the job. he actually complained about
too much junk in the back of my van. i had wood and handsaws back there that i use for my ''lumberjack''workouts. boy my wife complains about
it all the time but never thought a mechanic would...
your husbands a good guy getting that hot tub ready.
heres to a better day on tues....pal pete

Pete do you have a date set up to do the trial? My pump is refilled every 5-6 weeks, its a older unit and my dr says the medicine loses its effectiveness sitting in the pumps. So, she changes the meds out much sooner than 90 days.

hi susie....i have had bad luck with two scheduled trials. on one i ate food before trial not knowing that was a no no. on the other i had a small skin infection. i've been put aside lately. they say they will call with a date but they have not. when i last checked the doc was on vacation. he knows its a tough job to get catheter in because of big bones in spine.
to be honest i am apprehensive about
going in the hospital again. my last time in, two years ago, i had a pancreatic tumor removed and my pain flared out of control....thats interesting about
how the drug weakens sitting in reservoir susie....when its replaced do they also replace catheter?.....pal pete

Yes, when they put in a new pump they remove everything. Omg, you ate something that morning, oh wow, I would have thought as many surgeries as you have had you would have been on automatic pilot and not touched food. I know live & learn. I hate to hear that you think the dr is kind of putting you on the back burner.
Not every dr does this, however, there must be something to it. One of our members had a pump & noticed a few days before before her refill qppt her pain always increased for no reason. So, she told her dr how my dr changes the meds out & he moved up her refill dates and her pain stopped spiking.
I hear you about
the pain flaring but since this pump trial is about
reducing pain I would think this is one admission if it did increase it would be ok because they could tweak the meds. You get up & move around & do things when doing the trial. That would be the perfect time to have an increase in pain I would think. Haven't you been trying to do a trial for well over a year, thats an awful
long time to have waited. It you are serious about
doing a trial I would be calling that drs office every day until I got a trial date.

susie the reason i thought i could eat was that i was able to eat before the scs trial. for that one i felt fine during the 2 hours he tried getting it in and failed. i could feel the lead scraping my bones...scratch...scratch...but never felt pain.
today i felt very worried. the legs just seem separated from me. they sting almost everywhere and are quite numb almost everywhere on the skin of the legs. i just feel scared. not a good feeling. ....pal pete
