I am currently on one 10mg Patch each week and have a salty/metallic taste in my mouth. I have seen one person who complained of this when researching the patch. Anybody have any similar problems?

Hi Disie I tried looking these up but came up empty handed. What are these patches used for? I would imagine there was a info given with the script was the metallic taste in the mouth a possible effect? You could always call your pharmacist and ask about this. Sorry that I am of no help.....Susie

Susie, the norspan patch is the buprenorphine patch, I believe these are the brand name for the ones available in either Europe or Australia, here in the US they're called Butrans.

Hi disie, welcome to the forum. Yes I have used the burpenorphine patch, but only for a month. We have a few members that have been on these patches for a lot longer. When I used them, yes, I did have kind of a metallic taste in my mouth almost constantly. I'm not sure if that will go away after a while or not, most side effects of medications do wane off after the first month or so with any medication.

Hopefully one of our other members that's been on them for longer will chime in here, I know one of our members who uses the screen name "Ryobi" has been on the buprenorphine (specifically Butrans) patch for close to a year.

Thanks Matt & thanks once more for the welcome,

I have been on them for Chronic back pain appx 6wks. The taste only began about 2 wks ago. I thought it was the water, as I drink alot of cordial. I am also on Diazepam (Valium) and Baclofen as I am a Recovering alcoholic. My "alki doctor" as I call her isn't quite up with the GP side of things unfortunately, she's ok but normally for any thing else I go to another GP whom I'd had since I was appx 9yrs old!! I am now 45 (nearly 46) He just retired and I am at a bit of a loss for another good GP that bulk bills as I am a Disability Pensioner.

Hopefully I can find someone who has been on them for a little longer than me.

I suggest using the search feature here at the forum. Type in the name & see what posts you can you can pull up from previous posts here. With the weekend upon us things usually slow down around here.

Welcome to HW and the CP forum.

I don't personally have experience w/ this medication... but when I googled it.... it did have "changes in taste" listed as a side effect....

Hopefully it will go away if you've only had it for a couple of weeks?

Is the medication helping you?

Hi Tina,

YES... Thank you for asking. Finally my pain is bearable. I have been in pain since I was 19 and now well let's just say next week 46. It was only last year that the cause was found. Apparently there was some trauma to my back when I was young. (I had a very abusive upbringing and have blocked out most of my childhood) and to stop my back from breaking my body grew 2 large lumps on my spine, but this cause immobility in the middle of my spine. Now my spine will hardly move, but at least I now know what's wrong and have the CT to prove it to all the people who said it was all in my mind!! Then berated me for being on a Disability Pension and not working.
