He used to listen and help prescribe things in a certain way that could possibly help without endangering me. Instead of helping me with someone small like vicodin for neuropathy, he gives me LYRICA and says he'll never give me another opiate besides fentanyl because I have mental problems.


Is this fair?

What? How could he state such a thing? Sounds to me like he is the one with some mental problems.
The vicodin really wouldnt do much good with the nerve pain,lyrica was the better choice but his way of saying so left alot to be desired.

Sorry to hear that, and that is so unprofessional of this doctor to talk to you that way and in that manner in my opinion. I would be finding a new doctor in a hurry if this happened to me.

Hi Chronica,wow your dr could have use a round of charm school no doubt.I just happened to read a previous post of yours and saw the meds you take & some of them I have not heard of before,lol, but that is nothing new with me either. I have to wonder if there would be a problem adding another pain medication to the mix.

One thing I can tell you, is people are really misinformed when it comes to nerve pain. Narcotics & opioids have little effect on nerve pain. I remember you saying you have PN. I would give the Lyrica a real good shot at it to see if it helps because many people do get relief with it. There is also Gabapentin, Amitriptiline, & Cymbalta that are used for PN. Your dr really should have explained to you that neuropathic pain is totally different to treat.

I do not know what you took before being put on Fentanyl or how long you have been on it. If you just started it ,then you need to give it time to build up a little in your system. Take care....Susie

Maybe the DEA is getting involved so he's trying to lessen the narcotics/opiates/controversial meds he prescribes?

It just doesn't make sense that he would change his attitude toward you so drastically without a reason.

I know Drs are human and have bad days but that's still no excuse for being so unprofessional!

I do think he's still trying to help though, by having you start the lyrica. At least he isn't taking you off the Fentanyl or referring you to some other dr.

You've made some good points, LexiRae, where have you been all my life? :) LOL. I see things exactly like you do. I know how the stigma of drugs are these days, especially narcotics/opates, not only did he prescribe me Lyrica but I just found out he prescribed me Flexeril too :)

Lol. I took Flexeril until recently. The effectiveness has been wearing off, so I'm in the market for something ele to try. Apparently Valium is supposed to be pretty effective in treating muscle spasms, so I think I'm going to ask my dr if it's an option for me on my next visit.

I've also been on other muscle relaxers that gave me too many side effects, like baclofen, skelaxin, and Methocarbamol.

Like Lexi said, there could always be a situation with the DEA or something like that. One of my previous doctors quit prescribing a lot of medications because on of this patients OD'd so he was trying to cover his arse, ya know?

If you don't mind me asking, do you have a history of mental illness or anything like that? A lot of medications can increase depression and suicidal thoughts, so he could be watching out for you in that way.

Just a thought.

It could be a situation with the DEA OR LIKE someone said he may have had someone OD, or he may be afraid because you do have the mental problem. Opiates are no good for nerve pain anyway and the Lyrica is. I take nuerontin and have had good luck with it, know some that take lyrica and it works best for them. Good luck, hope it works well for you.

I don't have bad side effects from the flexeril. It's just not working very well anymore because I've been on it for a while. That's why I'm looking to switch to something else for a while.

Good luck on your new med combo. Those are strange comments from the doctor... especially considering that he's giving you fentanyl, one of the strongest narcotics out there! But at least you are getting meds... that I hope will help you.

Flexeril works well for many people. It can make you tired.... which is why many use it right before bed. For me, it makes me wake up tired, even if I take it at bedtime. I wake up with a "hangover" feeling. I use soma... and don't have side effects from it... and it helps a great deal w/ my muscle pain.

Anyway, let us know how the meds work.....

I hope things are working out ok with the Lyrica and as many have said here and the other thread, it can take up to a month or more for the side effects to wane.

I also agree that his comments don't make any sense and it can't be because of the state or the DEA since as Tina points out, you are on Fentanyl which is the strongest opiate out there!

I have rotated through different muscle relaxers every 3-4 years. The first time I took Flexeril back in the mid 90's when I was diagnosed with Fibro it made me extremely tired. Now that I've been on it again this last year, I don't feel a thing but the help it gives me with the spasms.

So, it's best to give it a good try and see how it helps and then decide after a month or so.
