Question about pain dr. appt?

Ok...let's see if I have this straight:)

It sounds like this new Dr...even though they gave you a lecture...ended up putting you back on what you were originally on (The Oxycontin 20mg twice a day and Percocet for BT)...

This was ok'd by your regular Dr. already, right as you said you spoke with him and he said to go ahead and double what you had (which brings you back to your original dosages)...

So, I would fill the medication and just bring in the bottles with you when you see your Dr. on Tuesday. The only thing that would be "wrong" would be if you went on Tuesday without telling him you got these meds from the "fill in" Dr. but you aren't doing that at all.

Your regular Dr. on Tuesday will likely just let you continue with this prescription and then give you a post dated one to fill in the 3 weeks when it's up.

So, I don't see any issue unless I am missing something as your regular Dr. was already on board with this amount.

The urine test is actually quite normal these days for anyone using controlled substances. And the only time people need to worry about those are if they are either selling their meds and don't have any in their system, or they take more than prescribed. Again, neither of these things pertain to you:)

We have quite a few threads (you can use the search button) that talk about the difference between addiction and dependence. In a nutshell, addiction is when someone is abusing medications to get high or "lift their mood" and not for the intended use to help with pain. As well as they take more than prescribed, or they abuse the meds by snorting or injecting them, or they buy/sell the meds to others.

Most everyone who is on a medication long term will be dependent on a medication. That is a physiological response where the body would "react" if stopped abruptly. This can happen with any type of med from heart meds, antidepressants, to pain meds.

So, unless you have a personal history with addiction to other things or it runs strongly in your family, I wouldn't worry too much about addiction.

Pain medications should just be one small part of the way we help lower our pain levels to a decent level. Tolerance to meds can develop quickly when we are solely relying on the meds or expecting to be pretty close to pain free when we use them.

Hopefully you are working with your regular Dr. to do many other things to help with your Fibro and Lyme. I have had Fibro since '95 and use a muscle relaxer from time to time when needed. The rest I do to help is daily exercise, stretching, acupuncture, eating healthy, drinking lots of water, aqua therapy, massage, and even trigger point injections.

I don't see you list an actual muscle relaxer....this may be something to consider along with an actual nerve pain med like Savella, Cymbalta, Lyrica, or Neurontin. Those can be very helpful to Fibro and Lyme.

So...I think you have nothing to worry about as far as your meds go and just talk with your Dr. on Tuesday...let us know how it goes:)

I guess I misunderstood that this fill-in Dr. prescribed you the 20mg Oxycontin to be taken twice a day to equal 40mg of Oxycontin a day. Is this not right?

If he only gave you the 10mg Oxycontin again, what does the prescription read? Take two, every 12 hours or one, every 8 hours?

And what is the total amount of pills on the new prescription for the Oxycontin? If he gave you a 21 day supply then we should be able to figure out the number.

How many Percocet are they allowing per day?

So....if you can answer a few of these questions it may help....

And the other reason that this other Dr. may have said some of the things he did is if he looked at your file and saw that you have run out of medication early in the past. Even if it's been ok with your regular Dr...it gives off a red flag to other Drs. I appreciate your honest answer in sharing that with us and that you are trying very hard this time around to not have that happen again:)

Well...since he has prescribed the 20mg...then you really can only choose to either 20mg at one a day or two a day at 40mg as you can't cut them to take only 30mg a day.

I was thinking that you don't have enough of the 10mg ones to take until you see your regular Dr. on Tuesday? If you do, then you can just wait to fill the new prescription.

But I don't see any problem with following the Drs. orders as he made the decision to put you on the 40mg a day as well as your own Dr. you spoke with said you could go back to that amount.

Out of curiosity, who is more senior of a Dr. in this practice? And are they both actual Board Certified Pain Management Drs. or do they have different areas of specialty? (Like Rheumatology)

Because this Dr. was chosen to fill-in for your Dr.....either way you decide to go I think will be fine but whatever makes you feel more comfortable..Try not to stress about it too much as that will only add to any pain.
