For about a year now I have had hip pain, it started off as a dull, achy pain and is now more of a stabbing pain. Also since about 6 months ago this has also been accompanied with lower back pain. I have tried icing and heating along with rest, none of which worked. BTW this pain is on my right side only. What could this be??

Hi Betty & welcome to the forum. When a person starts having hip & back pain, it can be so many, many different things or it can be nothing. The best thing to do is get in to see your dr & get some work up done to start with. Make a list of what tends to make it worse or better & discuss this with your dr.

None of here are drs, we just speak from our own personal experiences. I do hope you will see a dr and try to get to the bottom of this.

I have not been by in quite a while but was curious so I came back. I am a chronic pain patient with hip back and knee issues. A lot of what I thought was my back pain turned out to be hip issues. i had a THR (replacement) September and things got much better but...The last few months the pain has begun to return. i see a pain doctor who wants me to see the hip doc but it is near impossible with the new medicare HMO's this year. They list my doctor but when I tried to make an appointment I was told I must go through the hospital clinic well...Not sure if anyone is familiar with the novels of Franz Kafka but I felt like I was in one and still am! It took a month just to get an appoint ment for April 4th then on the bus to the clinic, they called and said the doctor was called away! They'd call me back (no they did not) I had to call and call now I have a June 20th so I cross my fingers. Meantime I use subutex for pain and it works great. i'll talk in more detail another time about the surgery (I woke up in the middle of it) and my pain issues because I am on a certain type narcotic-but later..Welcome Betty sorry if I took too much space.

Hi Betty and welcome. Like Susie said it could be so many things and without an MRI or some type of scan to find the problem it would be near to impossible to guess or suggest ways to help the pain.

Different things work for different issues. I would really try to something going with a Dr and at the very least possibly get some help in controlling the pain until they can find a cause and solution.

I have the exact pain, lower back and hip pain on right side, MRI shows bulging disks, arthritis. Your Dr needs to do an MRI to find out exactly what is going on

This sounds very similar to my situation also. My MRI shows smilar disc issues as Tziggy and arthritis and a trapped nerve. I agree you need to see your Dr. and get the initial MRI to find out what is causing your pain. If it is disk issues the sooner you get help th better. Mine started out as a nagging pain and progressed vey quickly to debilitating pain. (don't mean to scare you)
