Hi Rachel,
I usually rate my pain on good days as a 3 and bad days as a 6. For me, I see 9 or 10 as screaming, beyond mental capacity, coma.
But I also don't see the scale as linear.
Right now, for example, I got up early (7am) because I was in pain and had to distract myself. But sitting at my desk, it is worse -- from a 4 to a 5...on the brink of "killing me". Once my oxycodone kick in, I should be back to a 2 or 3.
Let me suggest that you do consider some opioids.... pain so high on a regular basis not only so seriously damages your quality of life but puts a lot of stress on your system.
Tramadol did wonders for me for years. I started at 200mg ER and it didn't make me drowsy. Rather, it served as well as a mild anti-depressant, helping my mood and, I think, my energy.
In fact, most ERs, once you get used to them (maybe a few weeks -- sometimes less), should not even be noticeable except by their reduction in your pain.
Finding the right one for you make take time and a good PM, but can seriously improve your quality of life.
