Hello everyone! First I'd like to say I'm really glad I found this site! I'm 26 years old married with two beautiful boys! In February of this year I got really sick and over a short period of time was diagnosed with Behçet's disease which is rare and so painful!!! I started on Percocet then after an 8 day stay in the hospital was put on oxycontin 40mg 3x a day with Percocet as breakthrough then I took myself off the Percocet and stuck with the oxycontin. All that was prescribed through my rheumatologist. Today I finally saw a pain management dr to HELP me as I feel my pain is a whole different disease in itself! Anyway oxycontin helped my pain however not to the point where I was comfortable nor was I able to handle life's normal tasks so my family has had to help me lots(thank goodness). So today I was told to start taking 2 40mg oxycontin until Monday take one only in the am and he prescribed butran 10mcg patches and Percocet 7.5-325 for breakthrough. I can't even tell you how happy I am to get off oxycontin because I hate it! However I'm wondering if any of you have had any experience with my new pain treatment plan? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance!

Welcome to HW Gerber! Although I'm always sorry that means welcoming you to chronic pain as well. Very glad that you decided to join a support forum filled with folks who can share this journey. I can't imagine my life without HW and the wonderful friends and family I've found here.
As for meds and how they work just keep in mind that each of us are so unique in our issues and more so in our reactions to medicine. What's a life saver for some turn into another's nightmare or simply doesn't work at all.
Butrans is on a level of it's own and as different as its make-up is so is the response to it from people. There are several threads on the current page now as you can see. The reaction seems to be that it's great for some and not others, its like it totally works or doesn't and we're not seeing much in between.
This coming from a very long road behind me in this journey that pain relief is always a search, looking for what's best with the least dose and side effects for you. I can't think of anyone here that relies solely on their meds or the narcotics anyway. We each have to find as many things we can to fill in the gray areas. Medication alone will not in chronic pain ever will cover totally. It would be a nice idea but your expectations would be so high that every Med wouldn't make the grade.
Aqua therapy, TENS, a healthier lifestyle, therapy, heat & ice and the list goes on are some examples. No miracle cures yet or none anyone's sharing!
Coming here and sharing and helping others is just as much a part of that treatment regiment for me as any of my meds.
Give the Butrans a fair chance as it's turned out to be one that takes a few adjustments.
Hopefully you're going to be one that finds success in it.

I'm glad to know your in pain management as that can help so much, each of us here are on different pain medication that help us get thru the day, I'm called functional on my pain medications and every so often find that physical therapy helps...some here use aqua therapy...and it's something you might ask your pain management doctor about, and it's good that you get help from your family, sometimes family support can be a great help...also maybe counseling might help. I see a pain management psychologists to help me get thru the nights better...(sorry if my advise is off in any way or spelling as I had a mri yesterday and they gave me valium so I'm still very loopy, sorry)
Many well wishes and prayers and hope you'll post more and keep us posted as we do care...

Hello, Gerber (cool name) to HW CP, glad you found and joined us here.
Like others have said, it can take a while to find the right mix of meds for what ails you. Hope that works well between you and your doctor.
Look forward to your future posts.

Thanks everyone!!! You've been very helpful! I'm glad to know I have people on here to talk to, it's comforting! So tomorrow is the big day I start my pain patches =] I'm staying positive that they will work but I do know it can take up to about 18 hours to feel the effect! I'm glad I was able to basically get off oxycontin without any withdrawl symptoms. I've heard withdrawals can be pretty brutal! Although I was on them for a little over two months anyway ill keep you updated on how the patches go. Thanks again!

Gerber,
Good luck on starting your new patches, and yes, it can take as much as a day to get any noticeable effect, but once it starts in your system, you should be fine. And you were fortunate about having no real problems coming off the oxycontin. Withdrawal varies so much person by person, glad you were on the good side of that.
Look forward to see how you are doing in the near future, please keep us posted.
